Brakish to marine conversion (GSP)

Post by dannyc02 »

Hi guys,

I've been doing my homework about getting my GSP into a marine environment, and I'd like some advise, as I've read some conflicting advise!

I've had him a year in brackish conditions (currently 0.08 salinity), and he's now starting to outgrow his 10g tank (he's probably just over 2" now).

There's a 40g tank (Jewel Rio) I've got my eye on, and now the questions begin!

1. Would it be better to set a new tank as marine from the off (which may take me a while to be able to afford - causing him to be in the smaller tank for longer), or should I make the new tank brakish, and convert it to marine while he's in there?
2. How much cheaper are marine tanks to run compared to brackish? (Once the initial equipment has been purchased). I've read people having reef tanks, and still doing weekly 10-20% changes, so is this really cheaper than brackish?
3. I'm not that confident with the idea of drilling in a sump. I've seen the overflow systems, but I've heard the horror stories of snails air blockages. What equipment would you guys recommend for a non-drilled tank?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dan.
