30G for 2 F8 puffers

Post by 1puff »

I just purchased a 30 gallon tank to house 2 F8 puffers.
Is one AC 20 and one AC 30 adequate filtration?

An AC70 would be perfect.

Do you plan to cycle the tank before purchasing the F8s?

I already have the f8s in a 10g(been in there together for 1week) so I'll be moving the filter over to the 30 and I'll be adding another one.
I'll use most of the old water for the new tank and top it off with new water.
I don't think this will be an issue . I'm presently getting nitrite readings of .50 but ammo is nearly 0. The SG is at 1.001-.002.

So you've been cycling the 10g witb the 2 puffers in there? I'd get yourself some Tetra Safestart & add it to the filter of the 30g, along with the puffers, as soon as it's set up. Use aragonite sand for substrate.

Don't increase the salinity too fast. Increase by no more than .002 per week.

I use play sand in all my tanks with no issues.
What is tetra safestart? The 10g was cycled but too much of a bio load for the 10g. Not increasing SG untill everything is stable. Will keep it at.002 or even maybe keep the tank completely fw till its fully cycled.
But I guess I can also cycle the tank with an SG of 1.002,right?

You are correct. The use of aragonite sand is to buffer the pH at around a steady level of 8. I hope the puffers are moving soon?

They're moving tonight. I checked up in them this morning and they looked ok.

Just finished doing the swap from a 10g to a 30g!!
I started at 9pm and finished setting up the 30g at around 10:30pm and then went to bed waiting for the temp to reach the same temp as the water where I was holding the puffs. The water is cloudy but its from the sand settling.
The puffs went straight to exploring and seem quite content in their new home!
It's been 2 days since they ate because I didn't want to add to the bio load in the 10g knowing I was doing the swap today!
Tomorrow they get some nice shrimp tail!!

I left the SG at 1.001-.002 for the time being to make sure my tank fully cycles.
I have a question about SG and cycling. Is it ok to start cycling a tank with an SG of 1.002 or is it better to cycle the fw tank and then raise it once it's cycled ?

You may cycle a tank at whatever SG you wish but yo'll need to get seeding bacteria from a tank with similar SG.
