Porcupine Puffer Compatibility with Another Puffer?

Post by yorkbag »

Greetings, fellow puffer friends. I have a 130 gallon tank. Is there another type of puffer that wound be compatible with my porcupine puffer? If so, what would be the ones? Also, would a snowflake eel be compatible with my porc? Thanks in advance.

I just saw in another forum something PufferPunk said "Have you ever kept 2 marine puffers together for any period of time??? We don't suggest keeping more than 1 puffer to a tank here."

I now have my answer. Still would like opinions on the snowflake eel if possible. Thanks.

I read something on this site about someone adding a snowflake eel to their porc tank. The fish was possibly startled and jumped out of the tank. This is only what I remember from an older post. Either way porcupine puffers are not supposed to be compatible with anything. I have a small basslet and the only reason he is still alive is because he lives in the rocks n small caves. He's smart enough to not get to close to the big fish.

I have seen porcs with snowflakes with no issues. Tight cover for both, is recommended.

They're really cool. I thought about getting one, but when I looked into it I was to worried about Juke. I tried a couple other tank mates at first. They either stressed him out or he ate them. I gave up on it. Maybe he's just a sensitive guy.

My puff is a bit of a wimp....lol....Puff could careless about the other fish in there. Even when the Domino Damsel and Clownfish try and take Puff's shrimp from his/her mouth, Puff flees the scene and hides in the rock. I do think my Puff is quite the fearful thing. When the Blue Hippo Tang would harass Puff, he/she would just hide in the live rock 24/7 and when the "Dory" would nip at Puff or slap Puff in the face I swear Puff would run off in a scene that looked as if Puff was crying and pouting. I would try and explain to Puff, "just blow up buddy, and prick her", but Puff did not listen. Puff reminds me of Superman. More so the Clark side that was skittish, fearful, and a bit wimpy. Yet, Puff has this defense mechanism and strength like when Clark turns into the strong and secure Superman. (Hint, hint: my Puff's name is related to said story....lol)

Thanks for all the feedback. I may try a snowflake eel in the near future. I do have all exits secure and a very safe and secure lid.

I agree. There are quite a number of accounts where this combination works. The only problem is the individual nature of porcs, their tendency to try anything, and their curious and bold personalities. You never know for sure. Our Orbicular Burrfish ate his Domino Damsel friend last week after showing no interest for the two months they cohabited in close proximity. Yesterday, he pooped a Domino Damsel skeleton with a loose black domino-esque scale covering, which he promptly ate again. Our OB is in many ways like a nocturnal version of a porcupine.

Yummy! Recycled food ^
It is always down to the individual puffer, as a general rule if the puffer is young you stand a better chance. In the world of puffers there are no guarantees though
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

I really cannot understand why there is so much resistance to housing high-personality puffers as singletons. Why take chances?

Love it, a big tank for a big fish is not only great to watch but easily cared for.

Watching my porc and s&s grow up together was awesome. They were best friends and never had a fight once. But I will agree and say it was probably the luck of the draw and their age when I got them. When my porc died my s&s just turned into another fish. So I will say they can work together, but I've seen that it can and most likely will become an issue.

I still wish I had a bigger tank. Someday I want to get him a 300 gallon tank
