I don't have a marine tank, so I can't say about the live rock.

For a tank to cycle as well as stay cycled it will need a food source. Normally in the aquarium your beneficial bacteria basically eat the fish waste. When cycling a new aquarium it is done one of 3 ways...You either add fish food or some add a piece of shrimp to decay and feed the bacteria, some people add pure ammonia, and some people actually use life fish which is cruel for the fish because the ammonia and nitrite spikes during cycling are very toxic.

Feeding the bacteria is also the reason why "live sand" in a bag cannot be alive...How is it supposed to eat if it is sealed in bag sitting on a shelf in a store or warehouse? As JP said the bagged "live sand" must be in spore form but it will still need to be fed to come alive a grow to a level that the tank is cycled and support the bioload. I'm not sure that I buy in to if "live sand" in a bag helps to even shorten your cycle, but I have no first hand experience. I just know there are a lot of myths and mythical products and directions out there that do nothing but pad the pockets of the fish industry. For example, PH buffers, Nitraban and similar products, the regular use aquarium salt, filter instruction saying to replace media every couple weeks, bacteria in a bottle and of course "live sand". If they called it "faster cycling" then maybe it could be given some credit...Maybe!

There is also a lot of misinformation out there from sources that just want to sell you fish and products, or from sites that are uninformed and just plain wrong. The best thing to do is kinda glob them all together and use common sense in what sounds best for the fish. Too often new hobbyist get bad advice...That's fixable. But some are give good and bad advice and choose and pick only the information that suits their wants over the fishes needs. I'm in no way accusing you of that, but keep that in mind when making some decisions. You know the old adage, "If it's too good to be true,..."


Also, are you showing any nitrates" And do your test strips have to have some type of scale to cross the color to a number? For example, is there a way you can tell us what each of the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates?

What are the numbers below the colors on your bottle or box?

For example:

CL2=0 Ph=6.4 kh=16 gh=16 NO2=0 NO3=10
these are not completely accurate since I have to assume the colour is exactly the same as on the chart

If you have no nitrate & no live rock, assume the tank is not cycled.

There is some nitrates but the kit doesn't test for ammonia and that's a little odd. And I wonder if the kit is reading the PH accurately.

It's definitely time to get that API Master test kit. When you do, be sure to really mix up the nitrate solution bottles really well by shaking or even tapping them on a table or your hand for about 2 minutes, or the test will give you a low or even 0 results.

I've ordered the kit today, hopefully arriving in the next couple of days.

Hammer, If you can get a plastic syringe it will help filling those test tubes to the line. Pet stores sometimes have them and I buy them at a farm store. Here they are like $1 and well worth it.
