The bacteria in bagged sand is in spore form. It takes time for it to develop into its active state. That can be the 3 weeks that the article mentions (I don't have the exact numbers handy). BUT once it is in its active state it must till propagate throughout the tank. That will also take time and under specific conditions.

... the sand that contains the biobed isn't getting the same flow-through that live rock would. Most of the current runs across the top of the sand bed where as with live rock the current runs through and around it, thus giving it more exposure.

This is all moot if without a proper test kit. Those hard number tell you what to do and when to do them.

thank you for the help. I have tested the ammonia, nitrite,nitrate, ph, kh, gh and chlorine and everything is as it should be. the fish have happily been in my tank for a week. is it possible to add live rock (cured) to my aquarium now or do i have to remove the fish etc.

I don't understand what you mean my feeding it and yes I was looking at getting a green spotted puffer, do u have any live rock in your tank? because according to PP it's quite important to have I am not too sure why but I do believe her

You can do it. If it is from an established tank. Just place it in.

full marine is 1.25 ~ 1.5 lbs per gallon. That is a lot of displacement, so take some of the water out as you are adding the rock.

I can not since I used a colour chart taht you dip into water and compare. I am probably gonna be told that I did this wrong too!

Yep, get yourself a good liquid test kit. Knowing these things are really important to the life of your fish!

nothing about marine fish is cheap

API makes a good SW test kit for everything.

thank you very much. this seems much cheaper than what I was looking at I do tend to use amazon regulary, but there might be a $-£ issue since I'm from England so delivery could be very expensive
