Re: Puffer Identification
So I take it no one else has any other suggestions? Also, I try feeding him some ghost shrimp. They're still alive in there after 3 days. He loves bloodworms also loves picking on my Nassarious Snails whom don't come out as often as they used to. (lol) He's only like little under 3 inches. Is there any other types of snails I can get? For him to eat that he can tear into the shells easier.

Re: Puffer Identification
I just crushed my first snail yesterday (not my fav thing)... DP's defended the carcass against their ghost shrimp until it was gone (def their fav).
I'd just mash them in the sink (maychance w/ spoon if queasy) and feed him the juicy goodness inside.
Is he your puffer now?

ask: is this suffering necessary or unnecessary?

Re: Puffer Identification
yeah i got him. hes eating bloodworms like mad and just fed him brine shrimp which he also loved. i had the food in the tweezers above the water level and he was spitting a jet of water at it. most interesting fish i seen, alot of personality you could say. Should i crush the nassarious snails then? I rather keep them in there to feed at night. They only come out at night now. He does pick at the live rock and the snails when their out of the sand but cant get to them apparently. (shell to hard i guess) So should i worry bout feeding him hard foods then? I did try freshwater ghost shrimp he doesn't show much interest and their still alive in the saltwater after 3 days. I'm very surprised about that

Re: Puffer Identification
We really need a better pic...there are quite a few in the Canthigaster crew, and a few of those have the false eye (which is the only thing we can see clearly in the pic).

Re: Puffer Identification
Can you find other snails? Maybe your Nass. can keep their feet, if you don't want them to be puffer fodder... I wouldn't bet on their longevity, though. My puffs used to peck at just the face/foot of the snail until it died, before I started cracking/crushing. They wasted a lot of meat that way. I think a lot of the mods and regulars here seem to feed mussels/ other raw store-bought crustaceans/mollusks.
I've heard about spitting water, though: saw a dogface a while back at a LFS that did it. Sounds CUTE!

The eggs have been laid, I am just waiting for the eggs to hatch. For the clam and mussels should worry about preservatives and stuff? Or can I just make a crack in the shell and let the puffers at them? ThanksPufferpunk wrote:With the shell on, yes but not as good as snails, mussels, clams, etc.

Re: Puffer Identification
according to fishbase there are only a few other possibilities but the pics there are pretty poor:
Canthigaster bennetti
http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/species ... e=bennetti
but not likely
Canthigaster compressa **
http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/species ... =compressa
This one is a candidate but most likely
Canthigaster solandri
