New Fahaka Puffer need help.

Post by leontari »

Hi All!

I just bought my first puffer. I've been researching on this specie for a while, but have not found all the information I need.

Size of Fish - He's currently 1 inch or less from beak to before caudal fin.

Tank - Currently in a 25 gallon, how long before I'll need to transfer?

Substrate - Is crushed coral sand ok? He currently has that in his tank, or should I change it to pool sand?

Feeding - I plan on feeding bloodworms and krill for now, at what size can I start feeding mollusks, shelled shrimp, crab legs etc..?
How much should I feed?

Cheers,

Leon

CC sand will harden the water & raise the pH. Fahakas prefer neutral pH & hardness. They do like to burrow, so playsand is good. What are your upgrade plans? I kept mine in a 125g most of his 17 years & recently moved to where I could upgrade him to a 180g. I feel terrible I couldn't do this sooner. He's so HAPPY with all the room he has now!
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

I have enough space for as much as he needs in my tank room. I'll play it by ear, when he starts getting too big i'll transfer him to a 50, after then maybe to a 125.

Regarding the CC do you suggest I switch it out with playsand? Gonna be stressful for him -_-

Yes, switch it out, so he is in the proper conditions.

Personally I would move him to his forever home now, they grow real fast and are feisty. Not an easy fish to move. It's better for him and you
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Can't agree more, mine was in a 75 for his first few months while I found a 180, he was only around 3" when he moved into it. 3 years later I almost wish u had room for a larger tank for him

Hmm in this case I think I'll move him to a 75g asap. Unfortunately I'll have to wait a few more months to get a 125g or larger.
