Preparing for a fahaka

Post by kass »

Hello all,

It has been a while since I have been active on this site, I am glad to see it is still up and running in full force. I have been tank-less for a couple years now but am planning a 6x2x2 fahaka tank for the near future. I have a couple questions to start...

I plan on getting a drilled tank and having a sump for filtration. Any recommendations for the minimum size of sump? I would like the sump and a 10 gallon snail tank to fit underneath the display tank. Does the sump need a light source (do the bacteria need light to thrive)?

Will a 10 gallon snail tank provide enough snails for a mature fahaka?

Thanks

I personally don't think you really need a sump for a tank that size (180g) with a single fahaka in it. You could make it into a very cool veggie filter though: http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/lib ... iltersrtr/

+1 to pp. Dun think u need a sump, I would think have a veggie filter may be more work for u. U need nutrients to support the plants. Having just a fahaka there may not provide sufficient waste for it. So in the end u may need to dose in additional stuff for the veggie to work.. For large-ish puffer, I have never use snails for them, never had the need to. They quickly outgrow what the snails shells can do for their teeth. Personally, I feed mine a variety of shellfish. Never had problems with overgrown teeth.

Agree on the snail response, too. Crab legs, crayfish, shrimp, clams, scallops, are all great alternatives then having to come up with large snails. Breeding to that size would take forever!

Thanks for the responses, this will make things much easier. Although I kind of like the idea of making a sump/ custom filtration and may still make one.

I decided to go with a sump. Here are some pictures of my set up. I am 10 days into a fishless cycle, using ammonia, no nitrites yet...

Nice! Give him some caves to hang out in.

I am trying to re-scape so there at least one cave like feature.
Ammonia finally dropped a couple ppm and I saw some nitrites yesterday! Made me very happy.

I got this little guy just over a month ago. He has doubled in size to around 1.5 inches. He name is houdini, as he disappears and reappears out of nowhere.

Sorry for the poor quality pictures...
