Mbu very tempted what do you keep them in?
Mbu very tempted what do you keep them in?
Well I have given up on kepping rays in my display tank in my house. I have always been tempted with a mbu just worry about them in a community so to speak. I know they dont mix well with rays and polys but have known people to have success keeping them with other fish. Now would my 8x3x3 be adequate enough to house one in your opinion, also its tank mates would be a few sp. of datnoid and my RTG arowana well would you add one????

Great mbu story stickied in this forum & also an article on them in our Library.

If you get a ton of filtration it could work, but the money you would spend on that would be pretty outrageous

538 gallons... it would be close..
Maybe by itself, with no tankmates, and a huge sump or auto water changer system to keep nitrates in check...

It might be worth trying, not sure about the arowana tho.

right 8x3 would be fine from 2-14" or so if in a community tank. after that wil need to be by himself or very few tankmates with adequate filtration and water changeds.
1- arrow + mbu will only work if the mbu is as big as the arrow.
2- rays and mbus dont mix atall
3- mbus are fantastic in community setups.
my advice is if you want one invest in a 10x 3 min this is what my bigger mbu is in and is fine. the baby 3" has always been in a 6x2 show tank with 80-80 barbs tetras etc

I totally agree with Flas.dan, pefect advice. the tank itself is ok IMO but bigger would be better, filtration with and Mbu and arrowana would nned to be pretty special, a sump ideally or a bank of FX 5's IMO.
My Mbu was a gentl community member but not all Mbu will be so its a luck of the drawer. you could find as the the Mbu grows it make feels its territory is threatend and may act accordingly

Keep in mind that no two puffers have the same personalities (That's why they are so fun to keep!), so be sure you know it's temperment fairly well before trying anything major.
Re: Mbu very tempted what do you keep them in?
My tank has 2x fx5 and 2x eheim 2252 internals 1200lph each packed with polyfilter. Also run a UV. Mbus are no more sensitive than keeping rays so no problems there my nitrates are never above 40ppm even when my tank was full of big predatory monsters.

Mbu's are fantastic with anything they can't catch in my experience...our Mbu eats any fish we put in with him if he can catch it, though!
