GSP not eating crab legs

Post by farcryjj »

I'm a new owner of a 2" GSP. :D He is living in a 45G brackish tank by himself right now.
By now, I've tried frozen clams, frozen shrimp tails, and frozen small blue crabs. I just noticed that the frozen clams are actually cooked clams, which makes the meat too easy to come off the shells. I don't think that makes my little puffer to use his beak, but he sure seems to love it.
He really doesn't like to work on the small crab legs that I fed him, as it seems to be too much work?? How can I make him to work on his beak with crab legs? By starving him of other easy meat? :?

Welcome!

You should never feed cooked food to your puffer. It is not good for their digestive system. Always fresh & if frozen, it is best to defrost in cool water & a few drops of VitaChem. You can open the crab legs so he can get at the meat.
Here are some other ideas for diet:

Thanks for answering! I will try to find some raw clams and crayfish.
I tried to cut and open the crab leg this time. He loves the meat, but still avoid to work on the shell... :-| He is just too smart. LOL

He will scrape his teeth on the shell to get out the meat.

I saw him more like sucking the meat off the shell. LOL. If the meat is a bit inside the leg shell tube, he would back off a few inches and then dash to put his mouth inside the tube and grab the meat.

I did cut open a whole section of the leg. He picked the meat off the open leg, and then start dashing to the unopened section. It was fun watching him to put some effort into it, but he seems to try to pick on the meat only and avoid the shells. :)
