The F8 I'm getting hopefully this week will come from a freshwater tank so that's what I've set the tank up as currently.
How long should I leave it before I start to add salt to the water? Also when I get the Puffer how should I get it used to the tank by adding water to its bag etc?

I'd dump a majority of the water out of the bag. Float for 10 minutes, add 1/2 cup tank water the bag, then again after another 10 minutes. Fish puffer out of the bag with a small cup, so it doesn't inhale air.
Keep an eye on the parameters for at least the next 3 days. If no ammonia/nitrite, you can start raising the SG. http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/vie ... =8&t=19348

You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Yup, just raise the sg slowly. Saves your bacteria getting hit hard
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Do you know I was looking at tanks for sale and just seen a figure 8 puffer for sale complete with tank for 50 quid, if I hadn't spent so much on setting up this tank I'd be on it lol

I know I'm late to the party but in case someone else is researching, I'd like to add my experience:
My puffer's tank was set up at 1.003. When I got my F8, I drip acclimated to 1.003 into a small bucket.
During my initial research I discovered that some puffer species like F8s in the wild often swim from freshwater areas to brackish areas just while routinely hunting for food. Which comforted me a lot about doing such an extreme acclimation. As long as it's at a rate of them swimming from one salinity to the next, I don't see a problem.
