My puffer hate the power head

Post by sarahsedaii »

Is that normal? I put on in the 55 gal tank to help with water movement, but Chompers is dark today and hiding instead of pacing. Should I leave it alone and see if he gets used to it?

It does not say it was used and with a box of stuff I got with the aquarium. I did take it apart and clean it first! I know he used it when the tank was sw before.

Google any markings you find on it, that should tell you what it is and what its flow rate is. In a 55 gallon tank you should be fine if the flow is 500 GPH or less, at least for a green spotted puffer, I cant speak for other species I don't have any experience with them.

I know this is an old thread but I hope it is okay to revive it.

I am thinking I have this problem too, the 55 gallon setup I bought off of someone on Craigslist came with TWO Maxijet 1200's timed to run every 45 mins on opposite corners of the tank. I have noticed the puffers are really shy and often hide in the caves or in the corner at the bottom of the tank when they are running. I think they are the top of the line units rated at 270 GPH.

I have 2 hydor korillas running at 425 gph each in a 30 gallon tank with no issues. before I put in the hydors I had 1 maxi jet 1200 and one maxi jet 1200 clone also no issues. I'm not really sure why your fish is having issues, but I doubt it is from the powerheads as 2 maxi jet 1200's don't push that much water. you might want to see if maybe they are leaking stray voltage into the tank.

Well I sure hope there is not any stray voltage leaking. Wouldn't that have killed them already? The units seem to be like new as I even have the original boxes and stock parts.

I may just have some extremely shy and sensitive GSP's. There is no telling what they have been through being "rescued" from Walmart and such.

The stray voltage would not kill them immediately as they are "grounded" in the tank. But in the long run its still bad for them. Try dipping your hand in with u standing on the four without shoes on. If there's any, u will have a mild shock. It take just a pin size hole on the cable or anywhere to leak in voltage.

I could not detect any voltage leaks so I swapped the two Maxijets out for my two Penguin 660 RFUGF pumps that were being used in my 55 gallon goldfish aquarium and placed the Maxijets in their place. The puffers seem more active now and for the first time they actually greeted me at the glass. My goldfish seem to have mixed feelings to being blown around by the Maxijets however. Hopefully they wont be too badly stressed like the puffers were.
