You already know how to do it artificially, but in the other hand, i´d like to expose the live way:
You can put live plants on 1.004, it is difficult, yes, requires a lot of attention and parameter measurements (ph, gh & kk weekly) to prevent algae blooms, because the algae take much more advantage in higher alkalinity, so you have to choose low requirement plants, and light no more than .5w per liter, you will need also need fertilizer (Ca, N, K, P & Fe are the ones i used) adding 30ml per week divided in three sessions of 10ml after WC... very complicated :D
But this is the result:

Very nice setup. Reminds me of my tank, great job :grats: Is this real driftwood I see ?

Keep it at SG1.003@25DegC; your F8 won't mind and the Vallis will thank you for it.

As far as driftwood in Brackish goes; I've had some in my mudskipper tank which is regularly above SG1.012@25DegC for about 4-5 years, yes it has softened a bit but judging on how it has degraded so far it will still be intact long for many years to come.

According to RTR, they live longer in 1.003 - 1.005 SG.

As Sevenyearnight points out RTR did a large study and found that hard low salinity brackish water is best for good health and longevity in captivity even though it is classed as a freshwater fish in the wild, this appears to be the case for quite a few of our low salinity brackish water fish.

Long-term captive conditions and wild conditions are not necessarily the same thing. In the wild, biological success is measured by reproductive success. In captivity success is measured by achieving full size, total lifespan and health (obviously closely related) and for some species, successful reproduction. VBery, very few wild fish ever achieve the lifespans easily reached in captivity. But few captive fish achieve full wild size due to poor water conditions, overcrowding, poor diet and inappropriate tankmates.

Alkaline light BW provides the longest and healthiest lifespan. This species has not been captive bred SFAIK. Attaining full size is easy with uncrowded conditions in high quality water and a good diet.

+1 to RTR, couldn't be more agreed.

Yes folks you found waldo, I mean, puffers! and yes polish puff, it is real driftwood and is a lot of work too, but its ok, pùffs really love nice displays.

Don worry 1puff I'm sure you´ll get a super home for your F8-
