they can get dark for many reasons..most likely in this case he is using it as camouflage...instinct to blend in..

cswank wrote:I don't know if GSP's darken in lighter conditions or not as well, but I've noticed that my puffer has a stark white belly in the morning (shortly after I turn the lights on) and the later it gets, the darker his belly and fins get. This time of night, his fins are dark gray and his belly is pretty dark as well. His pattern gets notably darker at night to as well I think. I don't know if that helps the diagnosis as to what he is or not, just thought it might be pertinent information.
dark light bellies can be individual traits of certain fish, you ge some that are always bright and others that have the dark belly. It can also be a sign that theres something wrong or theyre unhappy about something. if they swim and feed well and look healthy that do not be too concerned at the dark belly.

I find the freshwater part really interesting. Would not have expected that.
Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Give a fish a man, and he'll eat for weeks.

I wasnt sure if I should to have gone into more detail on that.

I was going to reduce the SG by adding less salt and take it down slower but in the end did it just by not re-adding salt in the water changes. I did slightly reduce the amount each week I changed still keeping nitrate levels below 20 and over about 3 I had gotten rid of all the salt. FIlter bacteria didnt fail on me and from then on just fresh water changes. Might be able to test the theory again soon

Are there any chance of keeping sabahensis with other fish?

Any chance of keeping sabahensis with other fish? Or are they like gsp's that won't tolerate tankmates?

Old thread/sticky, so I'd guess more is known about this species today? Or not? Does anyone happen to know where exactly D. sabahensis are found, more specifically than "South-East Asia" or "Indonesia"? I don't own this species, I've just taken an interest in the origin and distribution of various genera and species of fresh and brackish water puffers, and this one seems to be surrounded by mystery ;)
