GSP puffed!

Post by Asuran »

Well this morning was like any other morning i have my breakfast and just before i head out the door i spend a few minutes watching the gsp's sleep or just start getting active as they wake up.

well today Ronaldinho (due to his teeth getting long... its time for another trimming) looked bigger than usual to me... so I took a step closer and he was infact puffing up well practicing no threat in the tank... i have read on the old board that people have seen their fahaka's practing but dont remember reading about GSPs. anyways... he was semi puffed with little prickly spines protruding out from the stomach... he saw me coming deflated looked at me like i walked in on him as he was changing and swam away! lol

Just thought that i would share :)

I think all puffers must do this, but we rarely have the pleasure of witnessing it!

There are some pretty impressive stomach muscles involved in inflating and deflating, and I imagine they need excercise just as any other muscle does.

I wonder if it was just waking up and yawned (if puffers can even yawn) and it took water in. And just out of supprise it ran away cause he wasnt totaly up yet.

My fahaka yawns all the time... Not for the reason you and I do, but to stretch those massive jaw muscles. The inner mouth-flap is invariably closed during a yawn, though, and no respiration is involved. An inflation is a very deliberate deed!

You know, these fish are really just too cool!!

I've seen Mags puff twice...for no apparent reason, she puffs, then deflates, very absent mindedly, like a human would stretch.
Heh heh...Ronaldinho...that's what we call Robert, as he has more obvious teeth than Mags (both F8s).

Yeah...like they were angry and stressed at feeling ill...
Mags first puffed way back last year, and then a couple of months ago, so I don't think she's ill. Robert's never, to my knowledge, puffed.

My personal suspicion is that all puffers puff, especialy during growth. It is a system check sort of thing, and as such is valuable and harmless. Obviously when they do this on their own, in the water and not under stress, it is not a bad thing at all.

Hey maybe its just cause they need to practice it? Somethings need practice in order to do. Just like walking. If you ever have broken a leg, and once you get the cast off its hard to walk because you were use to hobbling around. Then all you need is practice in order to get back to how things were.

I had one puff before it died. It was harsh... but it was kind of cool.

"OMG, Ross, my puffer is puffed!!!!"

*sounds of running heard*

"OMG you guys, you wanna see Sarah's puffer all puffed up???"

everyone ran in and stared at my poor, sick puffer, until I told them to stop it, they weren't helping :?

my puffer only puffed twice. Once when I over dosed a medication. The other was when I startled him before his accustomed wake up time.
