T. Miurus Spawning Behavior - Best Guesses?

Hi Guys,

I think I am going to get several miurus (as they become available) and try to spawn this awesome meat grinder of a fish. I have one (Joey) in a 38 gallon tank with a sand bottom. The others will be housed in 20 longs. I've never really set out to breed something, and I think this will be my pet project.

What I need from you guys is your best guesses as to the spawning behavior of these fish. As most of you know, trying to find info on this is...uh...well...yeah. Since this community is all puffer all the time, my experience tells me you are the best folks to ask.

The Congo river is mostly a pretty violent place, current wise. But these guys are obviously not living in heavy current.

Anyway, looking at suvatiis, hairys, and other puffers that morphologically resemble miurus, I'd love to hear what you THINK spawing may look like, what may trigger it, etc. My guess is that if I acquire 6 or 7 individuals, I may be able to even spot some minor sexual dimorphic traits...who knows.

Thanks in Advance. Here's a shot of Joey.

Lurkers such as the T. Miurus are impossible to sex which would make it a little tricky to put male and female together. You really are taking a risk putting two of these guys in the same tank as they are extremely aggressive. I guess you could keep them in separate tanks next to each other and observe from there. Has anyone bred these guys before????

Yes...miurus is an aggressive fish, and that there will be risks in introducing two individuals. I would introduce them by putting one in a hang box, or by putting them into the breeding tank for the first time simultaneously. My breeding tank is a 125, which is currently empty. I will employ lots of sight barriers...but yeah...it could go badly I suppose. Miurus is a deceptive meat grinder, it's just what they do...that's why I love them.

I stated in my original post that individuals would not be housed together. As for being impossible to sex...all eyes for morphology and/or sexual dimorphism are not created equal. So, I'll believe they are unsexable when I have observed several individuals over a period of months side by side. Males are almost guaranteed to be slimmer to some extent, or maybe females are broader between the eyes...there's always something. You just have to be able to see it.

I don't mean to be rude, but I am looking for feelings, intuition, and thoughts on spawning behavior...not advice on captive care. I got that covered.

Thanks

I would be inclined to go with the Suvattii baseline, a flat slate piece of rock to spawn on and hope that the Miurus behaviour is similar to tht stated in the Suvatti breeding thread on puffing up and courtship. Not guaranteed but not a bad place to start from.

Very similar as this species: library/puffers-in-focus/suvattibreeding/

I definitely would NOT keep 2 in a tank, except for the spawning event.

Thanks Pufferpunk for your answer. I have a 190g tank.........nice place to try..... But I undestand that it should have lots of risk.... :?
It´s only and idea...... It´s only a month having this fish...... I am only trying to learn more about it.....

I'm pretty sure the author's fish all killed each other. :(
