I have seen prettier fishes. But they are cool! :mrcool: I love the way they semipuff to each other. And do I see the reflection of a dog playing in the background?

Leave it to a fellow to puff himself up to look larger & more "attractive!" I'd still be concerned about them hurting each other & would separate after spawning.

How come the tank is so "murky"?

I was wondering that too, and the tank looks a bit smaller than a 55-gallon, but perhaps that's just the view of the camera. :)

Thanks for your comments, everyone!
Sorry about the murky tank....of course the darn puffers decided to get up to no good at the most inconvenient time--just after I re-arranged the tank decor and stirred up a bunch of debris, and just before I did a massive water change...
That is one of the things I dislike about some of the new planted tank substrates--no matter how much I rinse it, I still end up with all these fine silty particles that cloud the water at the slightest disturbance...

That is actually TWO dogs playing in the background--I didn't even notice that you can see their reflections on the tank! But that is Bugg and Lucy, the French bulldogs :)

xrayjeeper83, I will keep you posted...hopefully if all goes well, I will soon be overrun with puffers :)

I definitely want to see Bugg & Lucy!! I love French bulldogs. I bred Boston Terriers for years and now keep Pugs, so love the snub-nose dogs. :smitten:

This is sweet stuff...congrats. Captive spawned hairys would be awesome. Do your baileyi ever bury themselves?

I'm curious...did you ever try to put two of your miurus together? If so...I am afraid to ask, but what happened?

A long while back, I had 2 miurus puffers, and at that time I didn't have a separate tank to put one of them, so I housed them in the same tank. At first it seemed okay, they ignored each other, but it wasn't long before one of them started biting the other, and it became a frequent occurrence. I realised that this was getting serious and so scrambled to get another tank. I ended up taking the bitee out and putting him into a plastic container until I could get another tank. I did finally get another tank, but it was too late, the miurus died and I think it was more from the stress of the repeated attacks than the actual bites. Real shame and I felt like a real idiot for even thinking I could keep them together.
The problem with piscivore puffers is that they see even their own kind as fair game, and it must be a very touchy situation in the wild when they breed. :(

Hi everyone. I'm new to this so I'm not sure I'm doing this right!
I'm doing a research project on hairy puffers in which I am trying to determine their sex by observing their behavior when we put two together. We have 4 in total. You all must have much more knowledge about them than me so I was wondering if you could help me out. What makes you think your puffers are female/male? Have you been successful in breeding them and if so, did you see which was the female and which was the male? What did each breeder look like? And do they prefer to spawn on slate rather than sand?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

How do I start a new post?! I was going to but I'm just going in circles. This site is so difficult to use.
