I did some reshuffling of my tanks and now I have a planted 55g with nothing in it. I have kept most of the common puffers(Dwarfs/SAP/F8/Fahaka/schoutedeni) at one point or another and I currently have a schoutedeni in a community tank and a Dwar red eye Puffer.
I want to do just a solo puffer in the 55g. I obviously want something I haven't kept before and I would like one that gets to a decent size since it will be the only thing in the tank. Thanks for any suggestions you may give!

Super choice.

I have two of the palembangensis. One fun and the other is no fun.
I'd love to say you can have my 2nd one that is a pet pock!
...I just don't know if they are going to a better home or worse.
If I could snap my fingers and place it back in the wild, I would.


The 1st of the 2 palembangensis is a wonderful friend to see when I come home.
It's in a peninsula style tank and seems to love traveling toward the center of the room closer to us.
It's going in a 90gal. 4 foot peninsula soon, the 60gallon is just shorter.

LOL, that species wasn't on your list. Maybe you should give us a list of the puffers you already keep.

I'm not sure if I'm confused or not but that wasn't me that replied lol. I have thought about a dragon puffer but I'm a little worried about getting one that's really inactive.

LOL, OK I was confused, too. I guess it would be best to observe the puffer 1st but of course, good luck finding one already at a shop.

I keep a hairy and an arrowhead both solo in their own 65b tanks and I lucked out on getting two very outgoing little puffs that are pretty active. I know this is not the case for everyone. The hairy puffer was my first and there is just something about her personality that still years later makes her my favorite. My vote is hairy puffer.

Know anything about a Pao palustris? I can't seem to find much information about them.

Seems to be just another "Redeye", similar to the turgidus. Same care, feeding & aggression, I'd assume. Quite rare though, as it doesn't even appear in Dr Ebert's book.

Tetraodon palustris, new species, is described from the Mekong basin of Thailand. Tetraodon palustris differs from T cochinchinensis and T. fangi in having no ocellus on the flank and spinules dorsally from the interorbital region to the end of the dorsal-fin base. T. etraodon cochinchinensis is distinguished from T. fangi by having a longer snout (43.5-49.2% HL in T. cochinchinensis vs. 37.9-41.1% HL in T. fangi) and is covered with spinules dorsally from the front of the nasal organs to the end of the dorsal-fin base (vs. from the front of the eyes to the end of the dorsal-fin base in T. fangi).

Yeah I’d be really really surprised if you found one, and like Pufferpunk said they’re in that family of southeast Asian target puffers that are all very similar. Leiurus, Cochinchinensis, Turgidus, and Cutcutia would probably be easier to find

Huh did not expect that. It’ll probably look a little small in a 65g tank but if you like them then go for it.

Are you sure about their ID? Seen pics of the exact fish?

No just saw they have them on their order list and I had never heard about them before. Wetspot is generally really good about Ids

I really like the size of the dragon puffer and it is definitely high on my list right now. Does anyone know of another puffer that's a little more active around that size? Freshwater preferably but I am toying with the idea of having another brackish tank.
