So I got a bit of a shock from my little 'Scruffy' (the hairy puffer)


Doing a gravel vac, I see this...



So Scruffy the hairy puffer is a girl! lol

I feel bad because I thought Scruffy was looking 'fat' so I put her on a diet. Then she was acting a bit lethargic and did not interact a whole lot with me. Little did I know she was heavy with eggs. Today she looks thin and seems famished so I fed her a night crawler and been watching her. She is interacting with me a bit more. I cant believe I never even considered Scruffy might be a girl. lol

Wow. All the females I've seen have the shaved look.

I have read all kinds of theories on how to sex hairy puffers. Some believe that males have more ‘cirri’ on their faces or elongated ‘hair’ compared to females. Others say the male tends to be darker, while the female is lighter. I read of one person who aquired a pair saying the hairier one had a square jaw (I think this is the one thought to be male).

Not disappointed that Scruffy is female, just was shocked at all the eggs that got gravel vac’d up and the fact I didnt put it together that she was plump due to holding eggs.

Guess all that "data" is wrong!
