The Puffer Forum

This little puff is one tough customer. I was trying to clean the glass and add some decor. It bit the every piece of driftwood, the scraper, wc hose, & tries me everytime I get my hand close. As you can see I couldn't get the glass done due to hazardous conditions. On another note its off the hunger strike.

Puffers are just so bold, love that about them. Mine never hide during any tank maintenance. But mine never have bit me or tried to.... yet

Has anybody on here ever actually been bitten by a puffer?

I'm extra cautious, i don't put my hands actually in the tanks other than my schoutedeni tank but they're only 2-3 cm at the moment!

PS nice suvatti! my Suvatti is one of my fave puffers now, but then i say that about all of my puffer fish!!

Yes my old full grown suvatti. Snuck up on me and took a v out of my finger tip. It wasn't a fun experience.

I'm extra careful around the bigger puffs and shell crushers. I'll wear a protective glove if doing prolonged work

ouch! did it leave a scar? did it hang on or just a quick bite and let go?

I best get myself some thick gloves!

Schoutedeni are harmless. I've been bitten by my congo who took a small bit of my finger, needed a few stitches but not too bad.

Yeah mine was similar.

I had a 2" red murius that bit my husband.

Its not bad. Looks like my scar from a pocket knife related incident.

It came up hit the tip, shook, and swam off.

My current jaguar cichlid is roughly 15" with a mouth full of sharp pointy teeth. One day I reaching over with the top off. It leaped and it the side of my wrist hung on for a second then splashed water in my face. Then puffer was way worse at 6ish inches imo.

I used gloves and was very cautious with the shell crushers.

I've been bitten several times by GSP's. They were only 1 1/2"-2", but it felt like being stung by wasps. And they drew blood. I was cleaning their glass in the LFS I worked in at the time and one kept getting bolder and bolder until it finally just took a bite. Once that happened the other 5 decided to join in the fun. Swatting at them did nothing. When I was younger I kept snakeheads and wolf fish. Up till then those were the only fish aggressive enough and in possession of serious enough dentition for me to wary of. That experience and a friend being bitten by a dogface puffer make me very wary around my Abei.

My 12yr daughter put her finger in the female schoutedeni tank, just enough to break the surface and has a nice blood blister now. She told me "keep your hands out... or all the way in". Great advice.
