They arrived!! New Baileyi and Suvatti

Post by NJD »

Hi all,

Per my other posts I am now the proud owner of a hairy puffer and (thanks to DMD!) a Suvatti.

I released them this morning and the hairy puffer has already eaten two frozen shrimp (that were defrosted of course) and the suvatti also ate half a defrosted frozen shrimp.

My hairy thankfully seems one of the more 'active' ones, he sat still for the first 5 mins, but hasn't stopped moving since. He's also a little bigger than i was expecting (which is good)

My Suvatti has also moved around a few times. No burrowing yet surprisingly but I'm sure it wont be long. I've managed to take some pics of the hairy and 1 of the Suvatti (although no burrowing he's hiding at the back!). I've tried to keep the main lights off most of today whilst they settle so hopefully I'll get some better pics in the next few days.

As expected my Suvatti looks a bit like my palembangs but i can see already a different type of character.

After my fahaka, I think Hairy might be my new favourite puffer!

Thanks to all for your advice.

Nice! You got some good looking puffs there.

Looks like the the hairy is nice and hairy too. Seen pics of some that seem bald looking. I do wonder if there is something to the whole being able to sex them based on hairiness (Or maybe its just an urban legend, lol)

Every pair I've seen the female is shaved :) I haven't really looked in detail past that though

When I ordered mine, I asked the store if they would make sure to sent me a hairy one if possible. While not the hairiest Ive ever seen (in pictures) Im happy with mine and his cute little beard. I think the one @NJD got looks like it has quite the beard too!

I think I'm buying a future baileyi tank tomorrow. I think a dragon puff would be neat to though

Yep. These small tanks are so easy and you can't beat the $1 per gallon sale.

I've very quickly become a big hairy puffer fan! I've discovered a shop that has a fully grown one in with lots of hair....can I justify setting up 2 extra tanks in one week?? hmmm!!

2 interesting tank I have here are the Seapora 60g, 48x15x16 high, and the other being the 33g long, (like a 20 long but 48 inches).
Both are black trim and silicon.

Nice for filters on one side and/or plants and light on the other end.
Long tanks can be cool...
One end differing than the other.
Slow current vs fast, and light end and dark end for whichever mood it is in.

Nice! I have been wanting a Baileyi for some time now. It would be a great contrast to my Abei.

Hi DMD,

I've been meaning to post an update.

My Baileyi and Suvatti are doing great.

The baileyi is eating roughly 1 shrimp a day (frozen and defrosted).

I managed to get the Suvatti to eat 6 of them on saturday!! But nothing since - but not totally unexpected as I know they don't need to eat every day. How often are you feeding yours?

I'm so pleased they are both already accepting frozen foods.

About they other baileyi - I went a bit mad....by tomorrow I'll have another small Baileyi and the big 5 inche Baileyi!! I'm busy setting up some new tanks :D I have promised my wife that after this, no new puffer fish for 6 months

I feed my hairy 1x/week but he NEVER moves. Wish I could get him on dead food!
