I finally got my irrubesco!! For real this time.

Post by Bleedingheartmommy »

I was moping about contemplating weather I should get a schoutedeni or Poa Bailey and I didn’t feel happy about either. 3 years I have desperately searched for my irrubesco, and had more heartbreak and let downs than all my Xs gave me in one!

Out of nowhere I check eBay. There they are. 3 irrubesco for sale. I actually had enough money stashed for it too! If got all 3 (males, but after so long I can’t afford to wait for females). I’m shaking and seriously crying. It’s surreal. I’m freaking out I can’t believe this. Supposed to be here Thursday!

No way!!! How big is the tank? Usually best kept in pairs.

I have a well planted 29g I was going to try them in. I also have two spanking new 10g in my closet, for temp holding in case I need to separate anyone (I have cycled media waiting in case the need to throw one or both up arises).

I knew 3 was likely a bad idea, all males none the less... but tbh, I got them all in case something terrible happened and all of them didn’t survive etc. I am planning on finding a home for the 3rd if all goes well. I just had to have them all, the scarcity of them and my fear drove me to buy more then I sensibly knew I wanted.

What I want to know is: where the hell did he get them from?!? There was an oil spill burning in the waters of Borneo the size of Paris very recently, fishing and Exporting from the area was pulled to a grinding halt. And like I said, they only had 3 available. Exotic Fish Shop dot com is who was selling them on Ebay. On their own website, they’re listed as “Redeye dragon puffer”, mixing common names of the irrubesco and Palembang. Fortunately they have wyswyg pics, so I know it’s the correct species even though mislabeled. I’ll try and upload some pics

Yes it's the real deal. Looks healthy, a young male...
3 males in a 29g will probably not work. Even 2 female and 1 male would be difficult I think. But with available tanks you can always try...it's been 2 or 2.5 years that irrubescos have mostly vanished from retail...so it's probably something older than the oil spill. Very interesting you find some, maybe it means the export channels are back working...I hope so!

He’s got torn up fins and aggression marks all over, and having not seen the other 2- my bet is this is the best looking and healthiest of the 3. I plan on having a MB bath waiting for them upon arrival, with wondershells and StressGuard in tank.
This will be my first shipped puffers, any good advice for unboxing and treating them upon arrival?!? All the sudden I feel unsure and new, I’m so nervous like a first time mom... I guess bc I’m so invested already.

Best thing to do is float for 10 minutes & put them right into the tank. As son as you open the bag, the ammonia shoots up.

Thanks PP. well I ended up only with 2.. he said one had deformed gills (not from aggression he says as he doesn’t house any puffs together). God certainly took pitty on me bc I got a male and female. So I’m happy with just two, they’re floating for temp match as we speak!

Though I think the female may be a lorteti... when she’s released and colors up I will know for sure!

Thank you, I appreciate it. All the people in my life who aren’t fishkeepers don’t get it. Even my man who has been pretty supportive through this all says “Holy crap hun those are little farts! They’re not much bigger then Honey (my DP). Lotsa hoopla for two fish smaller then quarters...” but I feel pretty satisfied with those “little farts”.

I’m gonna squeal on myself now. I have them with my disabled pea Honey. The female Red eye and she are hanging out together, and the male will be around the girls for a min then motor to another area to investigate. The male is the biggest, and both of them look to be adults, maybe subadults nearing full grown. No aggression from the male or female and they both ate right away and come to ththe front of the tank the moment I walk up. Very social so far, but I know they’re still settling. Honeys chin has always made her the passive one and never an aggressive alpha. I am watching and will continue to, so that I can catch any aggression or fin nipping between the 3. Pictures soon

Oh gosh--IDK if I'd wait for something bad to happen. Usually overnight...

PP, walrus and I know you’re right. The male got a fat red line down his belly and showed his keels (looks like a cool Mohawk) and that has me worried already, bc I know that means aggression or mating behavior and either way... I can’t have my rescue Honey getting caught in the middle. Damn it, now I’m gonna go set up one of the spare 10s, bc I won’t be able to sleep tonight... nocturnal turds will likely catch her sleeping or something...

Also, PP- were your puffs lorteti or irrubesco that had the Walrus Head of a female? Bc now I see him perving out I’m afraid for him and am thinking maybe both 10s should go up in case my female ain’t having it?

Yeah, I’d set up the two 10 gallons. You’ll actually observe brighter colors and more interactive behavior when they’re not stressed/together. Also, I’m considering getting one of these to replace my dwarf puffer, so if you don’t mind may I ask how much they were?
