Post by mcaquatic »

Still trying to figure out how to get a puffer back in m fish room. Any recommendations for a puffer for a 90g? It can be a solo fish. looking for something with some personality and at least a little activity. thanks

If you can go bigger in a year or so, get a fahaka :)

I think the lack of answers is because of the size of your tank. FW puffers are the MOST aggressive & should be kept as singletons. It's too small for a fahaka or mbu & a waste of a tank for smaller FW puffer species. Now, if you were willing to go brackish, you have many more options.

I would say a fahaka puffer bc I have a fahaka rn in a 20 Gallon I em upgrading it to a 90 Gallon in a couple of months or a year or two it should do fine in a 90 Gallon as long as you have pretty ok filtration. But yeah I think a fahaka puffer is pretty doable in a 90 Gallon tank.

If you cannot house a fahaka in 120g or larger, please do NOT get one! I kept mine in a 125 & he was stunted. I moved him into a 180g last year & I have never seen him happier.

my last one i grew in a 120. Hit a solid 18 inches and a beauty of a fish. I agree a 180 should be a min size for them

Well I feel that if you have a good water change schedule and keep feeding good foods that a fahaka can live a pretty good life in a 90 Gallon I've seen then in 75 Gallon tanks before.

That doesn't mean the fish is happy. I could live my entire life in a small room, too...

An 18 inch fish in an 18 inch wide tank is very unfair. I have a 22 inch dwarf electric catfish in a 24 inch wide 180. Sure he could live there for life but it is not appropriate. He will be in a 4 ft wide 225 within the month. Living and thriving are two very different things.

A tank should be wider than 2x the length of the largest fish.
