Best filter for single Pea in 10g?

Post by turtle10 »

So after I lot of research on this forum, I have decided to get a single Dwarf/ Pea Puffer. I really like tiny fish but from what I have heard they have big personalities, which obviously is a plus :)

Anyways, I really dislike the sound and appearance of HOB filters? Is a sponge filter enough? If not, do they make small canister filters for 10gs?

I have an eheim 2215 canister (164g/hour), if I really baffle the flow would that work? If it is too much filter for too little puffer would either the 2211 (60g/hour) or the 2213 (116g/hour) work?

Welcome to the forum. I would use the eheim 2215. You could tailor the flow from that beautifully and have ample flow, either of those other eheims would also be good
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

My DPs are perfectly happy being filtered by their Aquaclear. Even the Mini will do for a 10g.

Here's a few things to help with the noise of a HOB.

1) Get a good one, e.g. the Aquaclear as mentioned above.
2) Fill the tank as full as possible so you don't have the splashing noise.
3) Get a background to put on the back of the tank to hide the HOB - they're usually a few dollars.
4) Prime the HOB well by pouring in water first to the back of it to cut down on bubbles and other breaking in noises (but you will need to wait a week or a few weeks for the slime to build up on the impeller for it to be perfectly quiet)
5) Consider using a baffle of some kind to extend the lip or spread out the flow if needed to cut down on noise. Could even be a flat piece of plexiglass siliconed in place, etc.

I will probably try one of the Aquaclears. I would have to had buy new media and tubes for the eheim 2215 anyways so that will definitely cut the cost down.

I was also interested in arranging the decor into two "territories" and getting two DPs instead of one. I read that you can do a M/F pair, but can you do a F/F pair? If the environment is right for them will DPs actually get along or is it more like they are just putting up with each other?

Thanks!

I have 2 sponges (hydro pro-IIs) in my 10G with 2 DPs (females) & 7 pygmy cories and my nitrates are always <5. I also have a ton of plants.

But in this specific case, isn't it pretty difficult to sex them for a while? Would it be better to buy 3 to spread out aggression vs. just two, in the event both/all three were males? I don't know, because my last attempt with pea puffers didn't go well, so I'm looking for info too.

Yup, the young Dwarf Puffers are not easy to sex. By the time you can tell them apart, they are likely to be fighting if multiple males are present in crowed conditions. Very dense planting helps, IME.
