Freeze dried. You'll want to soak them at the least in tank water but better in vitamin water to rehydrate them so they sink. Not a good Idea to feed puffs at top water.

My puffers won't touch freeze-dried, even if it's been rehydrated, so yours might not either.

Re: Will Dwarf Puffers eat live foods?
Ok well I fed mine frozen bloodworms and it seems very much interested in it. However it doesn't eat it. Is there something wrong with the bloodworms. They do look different than the normal bloodworms that you think of (pink, fat larvae) while my bloodworms are (shriveled looking, brown larvae). These seem a lot like FD bloodworms but I know they aren't. The frozen bloodworms are- Hikari Frozen Bloodworm *3 step sterilization version* Oh and it is also in sheet form
Got my Dwarf Puffer *Squirt* on July 1st, 2010. Still attempting to get him/her to eat bloodworms.

Re: Will Dwarf Puffers eat live foods?
Did they thaw out and get refrozen at any point? The worms I've gotten from Hikari only looked like you describe when they got freezerburned and I had to throw them out. Freezerburned food is bad-tasting and can harbor bacteria.

No they did not re-freeze. I gave the bloodworms about a good minute to defrost. Or do I defrost it longer?

No, just until they're melted.
They might have thawed out at the store. I would take them back and ask for a refund.

Re: Will Dwarf Puffers eat live foods?
I feed my dwarf puffer tubifex and he really loves it. I used to feed him bloodworms, until a specialized
pet shop employee who owns puffers herself told me that tubifex is way healthier for dwarf puffers.
At first Puffy had to get used to it, but now he's munching them away, and if I present him a bloodworm
he does not really get excited anymore. I do breed rams-horn snails in a separate tank though, to give him as a
treat sometimes. They never survive longer than 3 sec after the puffer spots them.

Re: Will Dwarf Puffers eat live foods?
I have five DPs currently in a 35 gallon species only tank. They eat frozen bloodworm and white mosquito larvae, they won’t eat frozen artemia, daphnia, mysis. Fresh they will eat black worm, bloodworm, tubifex, Daphnia, mosquito larvae, brine Shrimp. They will also bite my fingers if I put them in the tank, it doesn’t break the skin , but you can feel it. They are like little terriers, if you hold a piece is frozen food in they gather round and you can feel them wrenching chunks from the block as it melts. The frozen food is all enriched with vitamins, so I try to alternate. Hope that helps.
