Common Name: 'Hairy' puffer

Family: Tetraodontidae

Distribution: Mekong river basin including rapids.

Water Parameters: Temp: 23 - 26C (74 - 80F); pH:6.0 - 7.8

Personality/Temperament: Semi lurking piscivore. Rests in caves, amongst aquatic plants or on the substrate. Very aggressive

Activity: Prefers immobility. Adding current might help on level of activity. Tends to "puff" without obvious reason.

Max. Size: 5 inches (12 cm), but there has been one (unconfirmed) report of a specimen approaching 30 cm.

Estimated Lifespan: Not known

Sexual Dimorphism: It has been speculated that the deegree of hairyness (or cirri) might help out in determing the sex , but this has been contradicted by other reports.

Care: Pufferfish are extremly sensitive to nitrites and ammonia and should only be introduced into a fully cycled aquarium. Due to their messy eating habits, overfiltration is recommended.

Breeding: Awaiting information

Minimum Tank Size: 25 US gallons (95 liters)

Other Notes: A very rare puffer with a very high price tag.
