CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF A FUGU PUFFER IS FRESHWATER PLEASE?

Post by puffertt77 »

Hello

In my lfs they're selling puffers under the name Fugu Puffers and they have them in freshwater

They are different to all the other puffers they sell (Mbu, Red Eye, South American, Banded)

The Fugu Puffers they have are quite thin and long

please help as I want to know if I should or shouldn't buy one

I've checked the Pedia and they are not like the ones you have as fugu

Thanks

Are you sure they don't look like any of the fugus in the pufferpedia? Fugus are SW fish, but it seems LFSs don't really know much about them, so they end up in the wrong tanks. Any chance you could get a picture of them?

Hello Thanks for replying so quickly

I've just been up there and they were closed today so I couldn't get a picture.

Yeah your right about them not labeling puffers properly, I had to tell them what they had as they had South American Puffers labled as Banded Puffers (they also had Banded Puffers but they thought the SAP were small Banded Puffers, Also they thought that the Red Eyed Puffer Males and females were to different Spieces of Puffer!).

The Fugus they've got look a lot like the ones the Japanese eat, They are silver down the side and have spots on them (not like green spotted puffers though, their very long and thin)

I'll try and get a photo tomorrow

Fugu is just a generic term. Common names are never accurate, so you never know what the real species is until you compare photos.

There's been a lot of these showing up lately:

But the ones I usually see labeled simply as "fugu" are usually one of these two species (both saltwater, I believe both are touchy as far as temps and prefer cooler water):

The spammers are a huge pain.

I can't promise anything, and I don't have much time... but in the time I do have I will try to bring the software up to date and upgrade the spam blocking solution. It should make the mod's jobs much easier.

It should be fixed now, see if we get any new bot registrations (we shouldn't).
