"Pufferfish" in different languages
Pufferfish is "Balon Baligi" in Turkish.
"Balon" is simply baloon and "balik" is fish.
How about others?

It's "fugu" in Japanese, as most people know. The characters mean "river pig", appropriately enough.

Well CArino= Cute
and tetraodon is the type of poison puffers have so I think carinotetraodon means cute/little poison.

really?!? Carino is cute? That's funny! Cute little poison... didn't think the taxonomist had that kind of humor when naming things!
Re: "Pufferfish" in different languages
Mandarin is "huh twoon." Not proper Pinying, because I never learned to do that properly.
But the first word, I think means lake (again, my mandarin sucks), and not sure what the second word means, but it's the same second word as in dolphin (hai twoon, first word is sea).
Crazed, what language is "carino"? All I could find in latin was "ship/vessel" (or keel, but I think that's pushing the definition a little far in this case).

Now, bring me that horizon...

carino = keel (Latin carina)
tetraodon = 4 tooth (Greek)
the toxin tetrodotoxin is named for the puffer not vice verse.
Carinotetraodon is the freshwater genus where the males have keels they can erect during courtship, for threatening.

Re: "Pufferfish" in different languages
That's all I know:
Tetraodon = 4 teeth
Biocellatus = 2 eyes
Carino = Carinus, diminutive of carus, "darling, dear, that is appreciated".
Puffer or Pufferfish is called BAIACU (BY-A-coo) in portuguese (that's my nick name ), but I don't know what baiacu means in latin.

How can we pronounce it? Would you pls try to spell it in English?yunachin wrote:Here is Puffer fish in kanji: パッファーの魚
By the way I think "Baiacu Verde Pintado" is GSP and, puffer fish is baiacu en Espanol, isn't it?
In German it must be something like kugelfisch or kugel fisch.

In many translations I see them as "globefish" or "ballfish".
