Im chuck and im a puffer addict!

Post by chuckfriedrice »

Ive been doing a saltwater tank for about 6 months or so ! Started with a 29 then jumped to a 75g ! I was kicking around the idea of a puffer for a little bit! I did my research and decided on the Porcupine ( how can you resist that face! ) So Im housing him in my 29g for now , he wont do so well in my 75 to many appetizers for him . So in a few months ill start looking into a bigger tank for him looking around a 100g , since he will get big! So any advice please hit me up ill be digging around here, lol!

Welcome to The Puffer Forum
120 gallon bare minimum and that is with no tank mates. He will outgrow that 29 gallon very quickly so start working on that large tank before causing stunning. Goodluck with him/her.

welcome to the forum! im sorry i dont mean to sound mean or anything but i wouldnt have even considered housing him in a 29 even as quarantine. your doing more harm for him than good unless your going to do many water changes a week as only 29 gallons for a GSP(6 inch fish) is pushing it. is there anything in the 29 with him? whats in the 75 that he cant be put in with? is that him in your avatar? if so i would treat the water for IP's if you havent already, he looks a little thinned out. hopefully you can get him in a bigger tank before a couple months pass, asap would be preferrable but if hes 2 inches he might be ok for a few weeks. i dont know how fast porcs grow but if you want to see the natural growth and a nice specimen come out from your hard work you should get him in the tank size recommended for his adult size and let him have a really nice tank to explore and grow up in

I here you all , Hes only 2 inches still , just got him on Last Friday , So I dont think they were feeding him like he needed so ive been giving him his ghost shrimp a couple time a day , Ive read they need to eat a couple times a day while theyre small and as they get bigger cut back ! I working on the bigger tank my 75g he will just eat my cleaner shrimp and my peppermint ! Just gives me a reason to get a big boy tank! LOL

you need to gut load the ghost shrimp, them by themselves are very little nutrition.

Id put him in the 75 and move the shrimp to the 29. If you cant do that, id Take my chances with him in the 75. He wont last long in the 29 and I have a feeling the shrimp are cheaper then he was.

I was tinkering with the idea of peppermint shrimp , are they a little better nutrition level , they are a little bit more about 3$ a pop but if they are better than the ghost I dont mind ! Im gonna work on the frozen clam pieces I got too !

Krill is like crack for a puffer. Very difficult to get them to eat anything else, once they've tried it & causes lockjaw. Read the feeding articles here, please.

From what Ive read its ok to give a couple times a week , Along with the staple food oysters ,crab meat, prawns and such ! Sounds like the krill is a bad idea thx! The LFS suggested I cut him off completely and just offer the krill ! I wasnt sure about that ! Ive been trying to drop pieces of prawn in the current like the articles says hes not really taking im trying to repeat my action hoping he will take to them if he gets hungry enough! I can get live prawns from the bait shop wasnt sure about that either ? Just trying to get yalls take on it , sorry if its getting old! I just thought most of ya had expierience not listed in the articles!

LFS are the WORST perpetrators of lockjaw in this species!
