I think somewhere their exists instruction for changing the included UGF to a reverse flow, and if their are not, it shouldn't be hard to figure out

What I'd probably do is pile some larger substrate (crushed coral?) over and around the now RFUG, then use the minimum amount of sand to keep the bottom near level; that should make tank waste much more manageable. The reverse flow should keep the sand away from the coarse filter media, and if you fit prefilter sponge to the intake of the powerhead, it's very easy access and you can rinse the solid decaying waste anytime you want, letting all the media of the UGF serve as biological filtration so you can rinse the prefilter out in the sink with tap water fearlessly.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.
