My GSP is near marine conditions now and I'm starting to look for a protein skimmer and a powerhead or circulation pump (really don't know the difference.)
My aquarium is a 40 gallon breeder. I'm looking for a protein skimmer that is no more than $50-60 and that isn't huge. I've searched on amazon but really have no idea what is good and what isn't as far as brands. I'd really like one that goes inside the aquarium.
Also for the circulation pump I have no idea what specifics to look for or how many pumps a 40 gallon would need. Would one be okay? I'd also like one that doesn't need an air pump. I like the look of the little fan ones. Thanks for all the help in advance.

Look on Craigslist & Facebook. FB has many, many aquarium club & selling sites, selling used equipment. You may even have a local reef club nearby. I bought a decent skimmer for $50 from a local reefer.
