New bettas!

Post by LilGreenPuffer »

These are my new Armadillo bettas. They're three months old. They're male and female siblings. If I was ever going to breed, these would be a GREAT pair, but these guys are destined to remain single.

Here's the little male. He thinks he's a big deal.

(See what I mean? He thinks he's so big and scary!)

Here's the female.

And this is what an Armadillo is:

And just for kicks, here's Vlad, my Aquamarine halfmoon. He's about eighteen months old, and he's not as well-bred as the Armadillos, but he's still gorgeous.

"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Beautiful bettas, looks a lot like a king betta.

I always thought mirrors were bad? That they stressed the betta out

They look like kings because they're young and the male's tail hasn't grown out yet. Kings (AKA giants) have plakat tails. Ultimately, the female will pretty much look the same, just get bigger, and the male will not only get bigger but develop fins like the Armadillo in the link - that semicircular shape.

Mirrors aren't bad. It's a normal part of a wild male betta's life to briefly encounter other bettas, display, and try to scare the other off. The stress would be if the situation became unnatural and the display didn't end after, say, five or ten minutes. One of them needs to back down. If the mirror never goes away, then your betta can't scare the "intruder" away, and he also can't escape from the intruder. However, when I take the mirror out, Vlad "wins the fight" because he thinks he scared the other one away. It's a good form of exercise, and it even helps their digestion to move those muscle groups.

Whenever I remove the mirror I always mumble something like, "settle down there tough guy" or "you sure showed him".

Me too! I applaud and tell him he scared the nasty big intruder away.
