GOT SNAILS? Snail Breeder Tank Pics

Post by JRC3 »

Well I bought my first 15 snails back on 7/31 and here are some pics from exactly one month later.

I had a little down time in breeding because I had to slowly feed my F8 the adult snails, but I picked up 40 huge adults a week or so ago and have replenished my eggs.

Here's mine. They came from a planted 10 gallon community tank I took down.

5.5 gallon, AquaTech 5-15 HOB filter, heater, bare bottom for easy cleaning and a 10 watt CFL bulb on for 8 hrs a day for plants. I feed daily and do 50% water changes and vacuums every other day.

I see a couple of big ramshorns and a bunch of baby pond snails :)

I like that you have decor in the tank..it is a PITA to clean..but I think it makes them happier for some reason..

jmiller, looks great. I have just as much fun growing the feeder snails as I do keeping any of my fish. I've been slowly removing a little gravel in my tank so it's easier to clean and I may eventually go bare bottom too. Though right now it is only about 3/8" thick and is easy enough to give it a stir without covering everybody up. Btw, I have my filter intake covered with an AQ50 sponge and a media bag slipped over that to keep the snails out of my filter. This also gives my filter more media to act as a bigger filter. Also, great job on taking your time and setting things up right. I love how the 37g is coming along and you have me really considering replacing my 29g with one as I could use my existing stand, canopy, and equipment with it.

xrayjeeper, I don't know about jmiller, but all of my large ramshorns are what I used to start my tank, the offspring are just now getting a hair bigger than my F8s eye but he has no problem with them.

Good luck

They should all be ramshorns. The other black specs are black gravel I thought were snails during the separating. Not an easy task telling the difference between brown snails and black gravel.

I have since cleaned them out and here is how it stands now:

I removed that big rock because it was a pain to clean around. Now all I do is remove each rock and put it in the clean out bucket. After water is syphoned out I swish the plants around to knock off any big pieces and put back in the tank. Makes cleaning much easier that way. I spend less than 10 minutes from start to finish now.

To give you an idea of scale that white one in the front is just a tiny bit smaller than a dime.

try feeding vegetables too instead of just wafers and flakes. I use flakes, shrimp pellets and vegetables. I scrape the seeds out of them first thou. PS ime the pond snails will over dominate the ramshorns so id try to stick to one type of snails. I prefer the rammys for there harder shells

JRC3, what is the pH of that tank? Those shells look alittle, scraggly. Maybe put a limestone rock or bone for them.

I just use my 29 gallon shrimp tank for snails, as I see they've found there way in anyway...

if they are puffer food does it really matter?
You can do a snail jello to get the shells up to par, but really.. what's the point? unless you have puffers that need harder shells....
if you follow me, you avoid stepping in the crap that I just did...
