Hermit Crabs As Puffer Food? And More

Post by SmelsFish »

I live in Scarborough and its a sea side town so I go to the beach a lot and notice Hermit Crabs in the rock pools a lot so I've got this idea of going on a collecting mission for them to use as a sort of live treat. My worry is that Hermit Crabs use sea snail shells and sea shells are a lot more harder than freshwater Trumpet and pond snails. Would they be acceptable for South American and Dwarf Puffers? If it is I've even pondered freezing them to use at a later date, what are your thoughts on that?

Cheers

Not a good idea, pond snails are much better. You can culture them yourself easily.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Aw that's too bad. I was wondering how the puffer would react. What about Trumpet snails I would rather breed them are they just as easy?

Trumpets are ok for dps but not saps, would likely break his beak. Pond or ramshorns are prolific breeders and suitable for both

Can pond snails go in a saltwater tank as food for my Valentini? or will they die too quickly?

You could pull the hermits out of their shell. They actually have a soft body in there. But you'd need to QT for a month, 1st.
Pond snails are OK for SW fish but make sure they see them & drop in 1 at a time.
