RTR makes a good distinction - crushed coral vs. aragonite...I tend to use them interchangably, and it's aragonite I used for my Tanganyikan tanks.

How's he doing with your figure 8? I've never seen any locally...but I'd be tempted if I did to pick one up.

FWIW - Crushed coral definitely buffers in FW. It's a rift lake staple to get those high PHs Tanganyikan and Malawian cichlids prefer.

BW isn't much harder than FW - RTR told me that, and he was right. You just need a hydrometer or refractometer, some sea salt, and about 15 extra minutes of time. Since I only have a low BW F8 tank (at 1.005 SG), I can mix up the salt and let it sit about 10 minutes after stirring vigorously to make...

Myaj - that's interesting...maybe someone jumping onto the idea after reading of this very old urban legend. Too bad it's so far in the past...I'd love to know if they were actually underneath the car and if so what type. I'm a thin guy, and I can't wedge myself beneath most cars - might fit beneath...

Myaj - check out this: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/robbery/slasher.asp Anyone actually know a single person this has happened to? Friends of friends don't count - that's the basic beginning to nearly every urban legend. You simply cannot fit beneath most cars, and if you can fit down there, you ca...

Yeah, it's a creepy one, isn't it? Urban legends are so much fun - you can get them in the email, and I've read them in our local paper (the Kansas City Star) written as if they're true stories (ever heard of the guy who hides beneath cars in mall parking lots and cuts women's achilles tenons so the...

Lisa - OK - urban legend time: A woman lived alone in a house with her German shepard. She comes home late one night - too tired to even brush her teeth, and slips into bed. As she's starting to drift off, she slides her arm over the side of the bed to pet her dog who she hadn't seen when she came h...

I hope no one misunderstands me, I'm not advocating keeping puffers with MTSs. But if F8s spawn in FW, it's hard not to see them wanting to nibble on MTSs, and they are remarkably hard little buggers as has been already mentioned.

I do have one question about this whole MTS thing - not that I'm doubting it based upon forum member's experience...but: Figure 8s come from Malaysia, MTSs come from Malaysia...are we being a bit paranoid or do the two come from totally different biotopes so they'd not meet in nature? Just curious -...

I like singleton puffers, so I added the water to my tank. I didn't do the drip method, but rather took several hours to slowly add some tank water to the bag after floating for 20 minutes so the temperature would be the same...it works out the same as the drip method - just less scientific and you ...

Cool looking fish! I seem to recall seeing an article on these guys recently...but I can't remember where.

PP - what SG do they need? Any other known requirements like tank size, food (I think it's live/meaty foods), etc?

I'm not sure how much surface area for bacteria the penguine cartridge would have...best to play it safe and go with BS or ammonia.
