Re: Chilomycterus Schoepfi & Water Temperature

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilomycterus_schoepfii Not a lot of info there, but you might follow up on the New Jersey summer breeding report(s?) within NJ's info sites. If you can find those water temperatures, you might get an optimum level and could operate a bit below that with long-term safet...

Re: Chilomycterus Schoepfi & Water Temperature

Quite a number of tropicals are captured from the Gulf Stream in summer and fall, even along the far NE Coast of the US and Canada. The low water temperatures may be withstood for a time, but they may well not survive them long-term, much less being adequate for indefinite maintenance in captivity....

Re: Chilomycterus Schoepfi & Water Temperature

I'd look them up on Fishbase. That was where some of the info I gave came from. No authoritative information to speak of on temperature. Edit: Fishbase says this fish is even seen in the waters off Maine (where we live) and Nova Scotia (North of here in Canada). The waters up here are definitely no...

Chilomycterus Schoepfi & Water Temperature

Both our C. Schoepfi have been extremely active, and I'm tempted to say almost hyperactive. The one we had in 2008 was named Mr. Busy for a reason. :) Seeing as this fish is found in Atlantic waters on the East coast as far north as Maryland, New York, and we know people who've caught them as far no...

Meet The-New-Guy, Our New Striped Burrfish

Last month we got No-Name-Yet, our Orbicular Burrfish who is now named Oblio, or OB for short. A week ago we we got The-New-Guy, a Striped Burrfish of about 2.5 inches. He is extremely active and likes to surf the stream from the power head on his sponge filter. As with Mr. Busy, our previous Stripe...

Re: Feeding Metronidazole to Puffers

have you tried injecting it into a shrimp? Nope, but I was considering injecting a shrimp or an earth worm, but I'd need it to be dissolved, unless maybe a syringe with a large bore needle. I can't remember how I did this in the past, just that it was easy. I probably just soaked frozen krill and d...

Feeding Metronidazole to Puffers

When soaking frozen food with Metronidazole for use as a prophylactic treatment for Puffer parasites, Seachem's Metro didn't seem to dissolve in the water so I looked it up. It turns out that it isn't very water soluble (10 mg/ml), and I've found that 100mg won't come close to fully dissolving in 1 ...

Re: Trouble in paradise

Maybe I misunderstand the situation. 1. Current setup has two fish potentially stressed/depressed and at risk of getting sick or being bitten/eaten. 2. It is a stress risk to the bully if he is quickly moved to a newly set up tank with the change in water chemistry and potential water quality issues...

Re: Anyone have success keeping a cleaner shrimp with a toby

Just curious... The cleaner shrimp should make a great backup food source for the Toby... if it isn't completely or partially eaten right away. The Toby might enjoy the attention. We (naively) put a cleaner shrimp in with a Crypt-infested dogface puffer. The shrimp sat on the dogface munching paras...

Re: Trouble in paradise

A short term solution could be to place the bully in a "baby net", a box shaped net used for breeding guppies, for example. It hangs on the inside of the tank providing a mesh enclosure so guppy moms won't immediately eat their live born babies. A baby net with a plastic decorations that p...

Re: Orbicular Burrfish (Cyclichtys orbicularus) Observations

Good observations on how critters without pupils handle rest/sleep cycles. Any info as to whether or not this one is nocturnal in the wild? The research published on this fish species is very scarce. What published information from educational/research institutions we have found all use the exact s...

Orbicular Burrfish (Cyclichtys orbicularus) Observations

As this fish is rare in the fish trade and care information is hard to come by, this thread is being created to provide information and observations by one scientist observing one fish. The subject fish could be a poor representative, so conclusions will be speculative at best, and observation may o...

Re: What??? (Poop Question)

I wouldn't expect that to make much, if any difference in your tank. How much VC is in there? 3527 mcg/ml It is really a food soak for omega-3 fatty acids, and I agree that the C is too low to do anything in the tank. I thought the tiny print on the back label said mg/l but it is really 3.5 grams p...
