Re: Porcupine Puffer, bring of death
I'm sorry about your puffer. :( and decapitating it while its still alive or perhaps stabbing it in the head with a needle is better...Mmmm i dont think so... i'd rather let him go PEACEFULLY in the freezer. The AMVA strongly recommends against freezing, since the fish remains alive and conscious wh...

Re: Porcupine Puffer, bring of death
Well, you can remove the rocks and he won't be smashing into as many things or such rough things, which would probably be a good thing while you figure out what to do. If you don't want to wait, then you will probably have to go with decapitation/pithing/blunt object. Since he is a large fish, it mi...

You could also just remove the rocks in the tank.

Re: Porcupine Puffer, bring of death
Do you have access to anesthetic, or can you get some shipped overnight? I have Finquel and can overnight some to you if you reimburse me the shipping money via PayPal.

Melafix and bettas/labyrinth fish
Hey, folks! We talk about Melafix for puffers a lot, and it's a great medication. But I want to let everyone know that it is not safe for labyrinth fish. Labyrinth fish, or anabantoids, are the group of fish that breath air with a labyrinth organ. Melafix damages this organ. A popular betta medicati...

Re: 30 gal for my beta?
Nitrates don't cause poisoning until they're at very high levels. The reason we do water changes so long before they reach toxic levels is that they're an indication of other water chemistry/fish output things. Errr... Ask RTR about this. He explains it better. Wisteria eats nitrates like nothing el...

Re: 30 gal for my beta?
Another thing you can do for a betta when they become very weak and are absolutely on their last leg is to lower the water level so they don't have to go far for air.
There's no need for an air pump, though.

Re: 30 gal for my beta?
It's probably old age. He could have been up to a year old when he came from the pet store - males are often kept back for breeding before they're sold - and a normal betta lifespan is 2-5 years.

Re: Porcupine Puffer, bring of death
OMG! Those symptoms remind me a bit of nitrite poisoning (it has neurological effects), but obviously that's not the problem. I do think it's neurological, and if it's not nitrite poisoning, I doubt there's much you can do.
