It has been reported multiple times and places that the FW puffers tend to more toxin in their skin than the BW/SW puffers.

No, the cocktail shrimp around here are medium to small shell-on shrimp, frozen, not cooked. Jumbo shrimp don't provide enough crunch for smallish fish for me. I eat those myself, but cooked and shelled.

I feed snails primarily, along with clam/mussel, crab legs/cocktail shrimp/lobster legs (all grocery store items, chopped a bit, frozen thawed), pre-soaked FD kril. Veggies are tried at times. For the peas, nuke a few in water for seconds, pop them out of the outer husks (discard that) and try the i...

The GSP will be quickly stunted in that tank. Move to a 30-long or larger as soon as possible.

Jayhawk - there is no magic in 30 gallons, it is a "practical" application that several of us have used successfully. It involves both footprint/swimming room and water volume. The 29 is one of my favored smallish tanks, but I only use one of them. Like the 20-long and the 55, they really ...

The extra water of hydration in BW can be an issue in some test formats, but that will vary from test to test depending on the particular chemistry. There is no way to generalize for tests across the board.

Is that the dots/bumps? If so, it is the fish's spines. Full normal.

Get spare tanks set and keep them ready. A 180 IME is 6'x2', so 12 square feet for a footprint. Eight GSPs in there gives 1 1/3 sq. ft. each. I doubt that is enough territory for a mature GSP. You will need to watch for and remove the aggressors.

I have kept three of them. One of them I would not, could not, put my hand in the tank without the fish being the other side of a "securely" braced divider. He attacked anything and everything that came ito the tank. Total bezerker. At over a foot, he could have taken a small finger or don...

Can you describe the bumps? Or post a link to a picture?

There is no way to judge a puffer's age.

The salt treatment should continue at least 10 days past the last visible spot's disappearance, 2 weeks if the temp is not well above 80F. Spots which were infected with parasites will continue to appear 2-3 days minimum after the treatment starts, from protozoans which had embedded but were not suf...

A pair of Dwarf Puffers and a couple of ghost shrimp? With some java moss they might well breed for you, and they would enjoy searching that two foot length.

To me it is too small for an F-8.

Smallest issue first - very hard water is a benefit, feel free to look that gift horse in the mouth. From my years-ago multiple-tank trials on F-8s, I came to suspect that they need the hardness/high TDS and much as the marine mix, and free from the tap is definitely a gift. I've never written it up...
