Re: Reliable sources for dps online? Anyone? :)

Exotic Aquarium in Sacramento usually has LOTS of DPs. They had two 40-gallon tanks just swarming with them the last time I was there. The fish aren't always healthy there, but with so many to pick from, hopefully you could select some healthy ones.

Re: Sick Figure Puffer

You can cut pieces from the old cartridge and stuff them in the new filter. The old cartridge is where all the goodness resides. :)

Re: Sick Figure Puffer

There are a couple of decent sellers of dwarf puffers on Aquabid, if you'd like fish that are truly freshwater. Think I saw some F8s listed there recently too, if you still want to do brackish.

Re: Feeding DPs bloodworms - how many, and size?

Sometimes bloodworms are a tad too big for very young DPs. It's also not uncommon for them to just suck the insides out of the bloodworm, leaving the clear casing behind. You'll be surprised at how quickly your fish grow, though -- they'll be eating multiple worms apiece soon enough. If their bellie...

Re: Converting to dwarf puffers!

Questions: 1) How old do y'all think the puffer is (I've attached a picture, mind you I have some large hands!)? : 2) What does puffer poo look like? 6) is it normal that the tail of the puffer is bent most of the time? Very very young. If it's a male, you might see the first signs of wrinkles arou...

Re: Questions: Pea Puffer

Yes, as PP said, convert to freshwater ASAP! I wouldn't worry about the appetite too much yet, as you've only had him a couple days. Sometimes these little puffs need a period of adjustment. Live blackworms are going to be your best bet food-wise, once he's settled in. Never seen a healthy, happy DP...

Re: Dwarf puffers

I'd treat for IPs, definitely. Follow the link Pufferpunk provided for details on how to do it. As for lights, I don't think that dwarf puffers mind much how long you keep the lights on, and if you have live plants that's a good cycle. But if you don't have live plants, you might end up growing a ni...

A bristle nose plec tops out at 3 to 4 inches. They're neat and have always been healthy and hearty for me.

Re: DPs: setting up a new tank

Just offering this: Your tank is lovely and large (30 gallons) for DPs. If you kept is nicely understocked (no more than 3 DPs, period, no other fish), then cycling is largely irrelevant. With that kind of water volume and a bio load from only 3 DPs, cycling with them in the tank would be harmless t...

Re: how long does it take for a dp to grow to adult size?

My last DPs were unbelievably tiny when I got them, less than the size of a fingernail in total length (including tail). They weren't full size until about 9 months later. I think it depends a bit on the size when you first get them. Smaller fish are younger and take a bit longer.

Heh. If that was the case, my fancy goldfish would be the Einsteins of the aquatic world. And trust me, they ain't. But they're starving 24/7 and have enormous heads.

I can only compare puffers with my other aquatic passion, fancy goldfish. And yeah, the puffers win in the I.Q. department, hands (fins?) down.

Re: Getting reay to take on some DPs!!

I haven't had success finding ammonia at my LFS. I also haven't checked out the article, though. Hopefully there is a store bought variety that's acceptable. My levels haven't started fluctuating, yet though so I think I could switch? You can find pure ammonia at some hardware stores and even drug ...
