Re: Blue paint dust suffocation?

If you ever decide to get dark gravel again, or want to use the same stuff...boil it first. The only thing is that a lot of the color will come off but at least you wont have blue water. In my class, my teacher stressed all the time that when using new gravel you need to rinse, and re-rinse, and re...

If you treat with your homemade batch please let us know how it goes - I'm definitely interested (and a step-by-step with ingredients/mixing etc. would be great too).

Looks like this is turning into a private conversation so I guess it goes back to the OP's original topic or it gets moved to the Classifieds or locked.

Re: Can fish have too much oxygen?

Well, undergravel (UG) filters aren't so great; a lot of mulch builds up beneath them, and they are a real pain to have to clean. I know UG filters used to be the mainstay back in the day, but these days you're better off with internal filters (or, even better, external canister filters). I'd recomm...

Re: Wood in tanks

Wood will rot in FW or BW (or MW for that matter) either way; you can make sure you purchase seasoned wood to increase longevity and reduce leeching of tannins into the water but it's just something to keep in mind that in the long-term it will need replacing.

Although if you have a refractometer to begin with just use that! :D

Re: Gone for a week. What to do?

I have my lights on timers too, and I do as PP recommends only I use those medicine tablet boxes which have days of the week on each compartment because you can put frozen food in them and then store them in the freezer :)

Edit: Oh, and enjoy the cruise! Alaska, sounds great (very envious :P)

Re: Euthanasia techniques article

Sorry, my mistake: I meant MS222 (not clove oil as I said) since it's acidic in solution if left unbuffered. There's an article abstract here on how acid-stress is caused by unbuffered MS222 solutions.

Re: Euthanasia techniques article

Yes, I have to question the article much for the same reason: touting the 'scientific' basis of methods on the one hand, but then neglecting to provide measurements on the other, is not exactly confidence inspiring... On clove oil: I recall reading about the question of it burning the gills, so agai...

Re: Emergency Trapped air

Have you tried turning off all current in the tank temporarily while you try and burp her? How is she upside down, I'm not sure I understand from your description - is it her head at the water line, or is it her caudal (tail) fin? (I.e. which way up is she facing?). Holding her caudal fin, pulling h...

Re: They say brackish is made with aquarium salt??

Aquarium salt = tonic salt (used to help treat ich, among other things). It contains absolutely no beneficial minerals, and cannot increase the specific gravity (SG) of your water to create brackish or marine conditions. Marine salt = what you need to use. LFS are almost always incorrect about this....
