Re: New lights plus corals!
A dip in peroxide will kill hair algae. it will also kill coralline too though, it works as a good last ditch effort

Re: POTM January - send in your entries!
I wanted to try for it this month, but not enough time to sit down for a photo shoot. Hopefully next month will work out.

Re: Do I really need a Phosphate reactor?
I built one last night out of a seaclone I had sitting around. I just pulled the internal tube out, cut it in half, put it in some panty hose to hold the phos guard pellets, and dropped it back in the skimmer body. I haven't tested the water yet but it seems to be working just fine.

Re: corals
the ricordea have been in the tank for 2 days now, and other than a quick taste as I was dropping them in, my GSP hasn't even looked at them. He like to forage on the live rock pretty much all day but seems to have no interest in the rics.

Re: Advice on setting up a marine tank. (no fish this time!)
you could drop in a blood worm or 2 just to add a little protein. Some folks have used ammonia but finding a pure source is a little tricky. if your live rock isn't cured, there will be plenty of stuff decaying to feed your bacteria. I wouldn't worry about it too much, read the fishless cycling arti...

I don't like the look of most mushrooms but I just got some ricordea in the tank on friday, they look amazing. Just make sure you get the florida, the yuma type are not as hardy.

Is there a hole at the bottom of the box? if so it is a bubble trap and not a pre skimmer, you can put a sponge in the bottom and it will reduce the bubbles going into the tank.

ditch the strips go for liquid. also, what kind of filtered water? RO/DI or just a brita? are you testing for marine or FW? I think @ 1.008 you should be using FW tests.

Re: Live Rock in cold water for the night
I got some LR from a guy on Craigslist. He pulled it out of the tank and put it in a dry bucket outside for at least a day. It was about 45 below zero. I put it in a bucket for a week and had no increase of ammonia or nitrite so i then moved it to my tank. Everything has been fine since, lots of new...

I'm going to recommend looking into a boost led par 30. you can get 1 with a fixture for under $100, it should be able to support SPS in a 5 gallon. The price difference will be made up in about a year after bulb replacements.

Re: GSP is still sick, fighting an uphill battle here.
If you decide to do it, this would be the easiest way Burgess et all (1998) do not recommend the use of ice or freezing water to euthanise fish, but Brown (2005) specifically describes a process that is acceptable for very small fish (under 5 cm in length). The fish is either (a) exposed to freezing...

Re: anyone have a good remedy for getting rid of mucus?
In basic training I had a pretty bad cold, but then we went to the tear gas chamber no more cold. I suggest get involved in any local riots and run toward the gas clouds. Or a hot shower with the doors closed to the bathroom, steam it out.
