Re: Mandarines in spawning behaviour

very cool!!

are they difficult to care for? i looked them up on LiveAquaria awhile back, and it says they are. I've always been very drawn to them, but it'll be my first marine tank and that makes me nervous.

Holy wow. Gorgeous puff & tank, Simon!!
I would love to have a big aquarium one day, but years and years and years down the road. I can't even commit to a city, let alone a house to put them in!
Look forward to seeing more about your puffer ;)

Re: Potential Tank Considerations

Oh, and yes, snails need light and heat. I don't have a heater in my snail tank, but I do have a light on a timer. Snails will reproduce more when it is warmer, but they will spawn no matter what. Feed them algae tablets and/or fresh green veggies, and feed them a little more than you would think th...

Re: Potential Tank Considerations

When checking salinity/SG, there isn't really a "test," like how there are ammonia, pH, etc tests. You can get a hydrometer or (preferably) a refractometer. If you get a hydrometer (what I use since they are cheap and refractometers are not), make sure it starts off at 1.000, which is fres...

Re: Live Rock and Base Rock Requirements

From what I have seen, 1 to 1.5 lbs of live rock are required per gallon, so you're a little high there. As for how much dry v. live, I guess a really disatisfying answer would be it depends on how patient you are. I think I have read 50/50 is a good way to start, but wait until someone who has actu...

I watched Lola pass a turd for the first time. Wasn't exactly how I anticipated to spend my lunch break, but okay.

Re: Potential Tank Considerations

I believe the rule is 15 gallons for the first F8 and then ten more for each additional, but I am pretty sure I have also seen that there has not been much success with keeping four or more F8s. Wait until someone else confirms those points, but I would go with what Bertie suggested--three figs and ...

Re: Anticipating a 55 Gallon

Thats definitely a plus! Have you ever had a lion, PP? I have read they are very personable as well. I just feel slightly apprehensive about a fish that stings. And isn't a puffer, haha! I'm so in love with Lola, she's vying for my attention as I'm writing a paper, and she's definitely doing a good ...
