Vacation time!
Headed to the beach with my parents and leaving my husband behind and in control of my tank. (I know that plenty of people leave for a week and don't mind their tanks going unfed!) I gave him a list of instructions and tried my hardest to keep it all on one page so as to not overwhelm him! I have ba...

Also keep in mind that coloration changes throughout the day and depending on water quality or lack thereof.
And cameras/monitors do not always capture color correctly.

Re: Naughty puffers!!!!!!
Ouchie! I am going to be super paranoid when I get my F8. It took me several water changes to not be afraid of my DPs!

Re: Porcupine fish, going blind after eating frozen shrimp
So now you put both of the fish that you need to separate into an even smaller tank, placing your sick puffer with a fish that will poison it if it becomes stressed, which quarantining tends to do?
You need to separate them and THEN decide how you want to treat your puffer.

Re: 3 Little Pigs!!!!
Donna, I've been contemplating the same thing, actually. Of course I want a healthy puffer first, but it seems like there could be a happy medium in there.
Where did you get the wood? I'm looking to find my own pieces like I did for my DP tank, but no luck yet.

Re: 3 Little Pigs!!!!
Donna, I LOVE it!
Did you get the driftwood in those shapes, or did you fasten multiple pieces together? They look great, and the java fern is place perfectly.
Is that just regular java fern? (I know it's not Windelov or Trident, but I can't tell past that.) And I assume that is some sort of val?

Re: Had an idea today
No experience with mussels of any sort, but I wouldn't be comfortable feeding wild-caught food to my fish.
You just never know. And what you don't know can kill you(r puffers).

Oh, look at him! What a great eater!
When I saw that this topic was unread again, my heart sunk. I thought that it was another one of your F8s in trouble! I'm glad to find that it's just a cute video of your new guy!

Re: Planted Brackish
As for water changes, I'm going to play it by ear and see what happens. I have FW planted tanks which don't need changes as often as others, and some which need more, so I honestly don't know what will happen. Quite possibly nothing at all will change and I'll stick with the same amount of w/cs! Si...

Re: Planted Brackish
Just because plants eat nitrate doesn't mean that you don't need as frequent water changes. There is more to water changes than nitrates.

Re: Planted Brackish
My DP tank is planted very heavily, but I don't plan for my F8 tank to be too heavy. The focus would likely be a nice (If I can find one!) piece of driftwood for the back corner with java ferns and mosses attached, then probably some vals to line around behind that. Like, instead of planting along t...

Re: Planted Brackish
RVS, thank you for sharing that link! Would you mind telling us more about how you acclimated the plants to the brackish water? Did you plant fresh, and then slowly raise the salinity? If so, how slowly? Re: Walstad method... I have not and won't ever use it. I can understand the goal, but ecosystem...
