I feed reef chili and coral frenzy. i will get some mysis shrimp soon. i hear vortechs make a lot of noise at 50% or more power. i am hoping to use a stronger pump, set the power to low, and avoid the noise...

Re: Terrance's 46g Mixed Reef Build
I couldn't wait until March.. Bought a Reef Octopus BH 2000 hob skimmer. Great product. Now I'm just slowly adding corals and feeding them everyday. I'll spend the next several months planning/researching my upgrade tank - 120g with 40g sump. I need to get a calcium reactor, MP60, algae scrubber, us...

Re: Heres an article on led lighting
I'm not into plants, but changing the fluorescent for a T5 is extremely important in the reefs. When I did the comparison between getting a T5/MH/LED cost and efficiency, LED comes out the winner in reefs. T5/MH users are the ones that switch over to LED for this reason, and its never the other way ...

Re: Terrance's 46g Mixed Reef Build
Its taking me a while to buy all the stuff i need. Im on a $100 budget per month for my tanks. Next purchase will be the surge protector definately. I want to save enough money for a skimmer and refugium and fish though. All expensive. I have only heard bad stuff about live sand. Besides the smell f...

Re: LED lighting needs for zoas?
Comfortably, I think at least 150 and can go as high as 4xx if you acclimate very slowly. Test each part of your tank since PAR reading is different is each part of your tank.

Re: LED lighting needs for zoas?
Hello. I do not recommend this light fixture. It provides low light and not enough of the needed spectrum. You can tell how much light the fixture is providing by getting a PAR meter. Every tank is different due the amount of light produced and the height the light hangs above the aquarium, which is...

Re: Led for live plants, whos got experience good or bad
algae and planta thrive on light spectrum of royal blue and deep red, 5-6:1 ratio (according to a graph i saw, and people who grows algae). i uncertain about the ratio for planta. lets talk DIY, planted tanks, i would put royal blue and deep red on a dimmer since those colors are primary for photosy...

Re: Retiring Puffer Addict
Family do not agree with that many tanks unfortunately. I want more reef tanks, but family says there are too many tanks in the house.
Right now, my reef is almost about to begin. I'm waiting for my lights to ship to my front door after Christmas.

Retiring Puffer Addict
Its been a good 1.5 years of being a puffer addict. I learned a lot about fish keeping, filtration and water quality as a puffer addict. Its time to breakdown my puffer tanks and change gears. My Fahaka and Turgidus will be put up for adoption with local fish keepers. I have a really strong interest...

Re: lighting questions
a PAR meter would tell you a lot more than what we can tell you. It also depends on the type of plants you want to grow. My guess is that the light is not strong enough to cover the entire footprint of the tank. If your raise the light fixture in attempt to even out the spread of light, then you dec...

Re: Colomesus asellus - substrate and others
To answer your question, white sand looks dirty after a while. If your meant to say light brown, then yes it would look better than black sand IMO. I have black sand. It makes my tank look very dark. I'm going to change it next year after I'm finish building my other tank.
