Nitrate reactor

Hi, Any body know if this thing will work/help with my 25 gallon brackish tank? http://www.aquacave.com/Nitrate-Reductor-400-up-to-150-gal-by-AquaMedic-P383C83.aspx Seems a little too good to be true (why wouldn't filter media bacteria do the same job). But if anyone has any success that they would ...

Re: Feeding puffer bloodworms?

The cones work well with live worms, because they are wiggling around and make their ways through the little holes. Dead worms don't move and you will probably end up with a bunch of dead worms sitting around not able to be eaten. But then again i have never tried dead ones in the cone, just live on...

Re: Lake snails and crawfish

I will be keeping my f8 in 1.005. I guess i will just QT the snails and craw for a month or so.

When i put the snails and craw in the feeder QT tank i rinsed them in tap water (well water) for 10 seconds. I thought this would remove most lake water form them.

Re: Puffer Shelter - Hobby?

Thats why i said i do all hobby business with a private LFS. There is definitely demand for all those little GSPs being labeled as freshwater, walmart has probably sold 50,000 of them. Maybe not at small fish stores that will inform their customers of the truth, but not all pet stores have the same ...

Re: New figure 8 puffer

Sponge filters are good for biological filtration, but i didn't feel like my old one did great at mechanical filtration. For snails though, may be the best bet.

Re: Puffer Shelter - Hobby?

Most of the walmarts in Canada, or Ontario anyways have stopped the live fish thing which is very good! Apparently walmart bringing in fish and then letting them die wasn't profitable. Its very sad that stores have to lie about a fish in order to sell a bunch of them. The worst part is that n...

Lake snails and crawfish

Hi, I'm getting a pair of F8 puffers and i live right on a lake full of fresh food for them. I was just wondering if it is a good idea to feed puffer fish live food from a lake? I can get my hands on as many crawfish and snails as i want and will keep them in a QT tank for weeks, but is it still too...

Re: New figure 8 puffer

What you can do is get a pail with a lid and hang the filter on the rim and cut tightly around the filter foot print on the lid. The water fall on hang on back filters is lower then where the filter grabs the rim so that could definitely be achieved. You just need to make sure that there are air hol...

Re: Puffer Shelter - Hobby?

The problem is that its just a big cycle. Its called supply and demand, and when they sell one to you they go and buy two more. Maybe if one has been in a pet store for 6 months, but to be honest if you wanted to do the rescue thing, its much better to rescue from abusive (uniformed) owners. And lec...

Re: New figure 8 puffer

You can go that route if you want, but you can get a cheapo 5gal pail and put it anywhere on the floor or what ever and its much easier to get the snails out to feed in a pail. But good luck with the snail breeding! If you do water changes you'll get them breeding. My tip would be to not use gravel,...

Re: 15 Gallon...slowly brackish

I'm pretty sure that you have to calibrate that instant ocean hydrometer.

I was having the same problem with the salt level staying at 1.004, but realized that 1.004 is perfectly ideal for F8s.

I was using teaspoons as well, but i think its actually more like 8 tablespoons.

Re: New figure 8 puffer

My snail breeding experience came from when i had loaches. I am just getting a snail tank ready for when my brackish tank is cycled and i move my puffers in. I think generally people just throw a few snails in a week, but i could be wrong on that. Someone else can confirm. You can also feed them thi...

Re: I wound up with a Figure 8.

Walmart usually restocks pretty often. Could you order the medicine through your LFS?
