Tank Journal - puffers & tankmates

So it's been about 2 months since setting up the tank, and a month since fishies went in. It's going well and everyone is still with us <knock on wood>. The puffers are very happy, and when I see their intelligence and energy come alive, I realize that although it didn't seem so very cramped back th...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

Thanks Hillehaus! I really lucked out with that LR. Lots of interesting shapes/textures. It just instantly cycled the tank, and I think the bristle worm population is calming down a bit too. I didn't see my YW goby for a week after adding him but he's grown a lot. I'm thinking he's been feeding on t...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

I'll wrap up this thread with a last update. They are doing great, good appetite, loving their rock, not eating anything other than their food, etc. The clowns in fact are more greedy right now. When I drop in snails, they get to them first before they realize they don't like them and drop 'em; then...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

I think I figured out why I can't seem to get nitrates lower. I had put a little bag of Purigen in pre skimmer & noticed water was overflowing instead of going thru. I thought it was the Purigen but when I took it out, it was still overflowing so I remembered there's a small sponge in there way at t...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

Well, they are in! Whew...spent the whole day and late into the night. At first I thought I might be dripping too fast, so I slowed it to about a drop per sec. As night rolled in, I thought, maybe I need to speed this up. My husband rolled his eyes at my setup, heaters, dripline ,etc. He was like, c...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

I don't know why I have so many bristleworms. I'm definitely not overfeeding. I put their food in with the chopsticks & watch while they eat - very little goes uneaten. They are even in the zoa colony :? There were a bunch on the glass in one corner & I just scraped them off with the net. One minute...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

Well, I woke up to find that my little halimeda sprout was completely eaten up. Sigh. C'est la vie, eh. I think the culprit was the blue-leg hermit, who was scaling the vertical wall (he loves to do this, I keep hearing the Mission Impossible music) up to that area when I turned off the lights. Agai...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

Yes I read about gloves on one of these forums. So much you learn here! I used latex gloves & put a little elastic around my wrist. I'm looking at getting a pair of those really long gloves. Great idea. Stuff changes fast. Like I'm sure the clowns are bigger already (much more spunky/friendly too). ...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

Ok, so it's not aiptasia. My niece had also bought me a peppermint shrimp (yes she is a very spontaneous buyer :D ) and I commuted his death sentence by returning him to the store. This lfs has more display tanks so it was cool to see stuff in beautiful natural settings (my usual store has more inve...

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

image.jpeg Here's a close-up. Sorry, it's just taken with phone. Hillehaus, my little guy looks just like the one in your photo. I read aiptasia is like a mini palm tree (?) and this is not like that, it does not have a "trunk." The base is like a white disk and does look hard. (Aiptasia would be a...
