Re: red algae / bacteria?

Yeah, that's Cyanobacteria. It can be red, even in freshwater tanks. I used to see it all the time in my saltwater tank. I frequently mistook it for coraline algae due to the color. Some ideas for you: black out the tank while manually removing as much of this stuff as you can as 1st Timer suggested...

Re: Crazy Valentini Puff "Bloat" Sleeping!

Camille has been gone for about two years now, unfortunately, but she was a blue spotted puffer; Canthigaster Solandri.

Re: GSP‘s died

Do you have any cyanobacteria or algae growing in the tank? How about powerheads for water movement/surface agitation?

I've had some tobies. They never seemed interested in the corals growing on my live rock.

Re: Starting up new tank for my GSPs

Wow. Really like the new tank, Maggiec! It makes me want to pull the old 40 out of the attic and rebuild my FOWLR tank. Good work!

Re: detritus worms as food?

I wouldn't for the simple fact that a pufferfish's natural diet is crustaceans, not worms. I don't imagine they would hurt him (unless it's a bristle worm!); there's simply healthier things he could be eating.

Besides, what would you rather eat - a lobster tail or a... 'detritus' eater. ;)

Re: weird thing in refugium

Part of the fun of having a refugium is not knowing what's going to end up growing in it.

The other part of the 'fun' is sticking your hand in it and feeling something grab it! :)

Re: Diatom Algae in F8 Tank

I've never seen a pleco that wanted anything to do with diatoms. Diatoms have a silicon shell and get this from tap water; municipal water companies add silicates to tap water to help preserve metal water pipes. One solution would be to not use tap water and only use Reverse Osmosis water, but that ...

Re: Why can't I put more than 2 GSP's in a 55g?

Since you're wanting GSP's the goal, hopefully, is to convert them to full marine where they will thrive. Then, you can go with a FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) setup; with enough live rock and a few power heads, mechanical filtration becomes unnecessary. In the meantime, I would suggest over-filt...

Re: please help me rekindle my passion

Absolutely, don't make it a chore. That's exactly what happened to me. I used to have my tank in my spare bedroom, kept it in pristine shape, heck I even enjoyed working on it. Then, we got a puppy, who got into literally everything, and I had to keep the door to the spare bedroom shut all the time....

I'm no expert, but he definitely looks like some kind of fugu to me. Interesting coloration, too.

Re: Canthigaster papua and C. solandri HELP! :)

A male toby puffer has iridescent lines (usually blue-green in color) radiating from the back of the head. Careful not to confuse these with their normal markings, especially on the Solandri. He will also have blue-grey lines under his lower jaws, and a dark patch next to his butt. Females lack all ...

Re: Marine GSP tankmates

I agree. I had a 40 gallon breeder with a GSP and a bullet goby and it seemed crowded. Fortunately they got along fine with each other, but if I ever planned to do that again I'd upgrade to at least a 55.
