I've also read about Japanese Trapdoor snails. I've heard that a lot of FW people like them because they only reproduce in BW. That way you never have your tank over-run (not a problem for puffer folk). As their name suggests they also have a opercula (sp?) like MTS, which might help keep them safe ...

Sadly today the female died. I had seperated them, so I suspect it was a disease that killed her. But maybe she was stressed and made her more susceptible to disease. She only got chased about once or twice a day, though. Maybe once the 29g is freed up, I'll try to order more. But maybe not. Of the ...

1) The bumble bee gobies are in there, because this tank was supposed to be a BW tank with gobies and a Fig8, but the LFS got in these irrubesco sooner than I expected. So, the irrubesco are living in the 20g with the gobies until I move and put the 29g community into the 55g, freeing up the 29g for...

Irrubesco fighting?

So, I got a pair of irrubescos about a week ago. They look pretty healthy. The female had a touch of ich that showed up the day after I got them, but with a bit warmer temps and some salt, it seems to have cleared up. But, I've noticed that she seems to always be hiding and breating a bit heavy. She...

Not to hijack the thread, but how big a tank does a porc puff need? I'd really like to get one, but wanna make sure I have a big enough tank before I do.

Yeah, I would never buy a dyed fish knowingly. It just seems like a cruel dangerous process. But then I guess there are plenty of people who "dye" themselves with tattoos :)
I guess if my puffer asked for a specific tat, I'd let him get it, but at this point that hasn't happened yet

Sorry to hear about your loss!
It's too bad that water companies don't think of how changing the composition might affect people. I see it in both this hobby and my other, homebrewing.

Although, if your fish are showing signs of irritation and flashing, then it's not really just prevenetitive, there are signs of something wrong.

aragonite in a canister?

I"ve set up a 20g tank that will eventually be a BW tank for a fig8 puffer and a few bumble bee gobies. But, I really didn't want the look of the whitish gravel, so I went with the red flint gravel that works so well in all my FW tanks. I figured that since my water is really hard with a ph of ...

How sad!
I knew they dyed some of the cheap tetras and such, but I never would have thought they'd dye something like a porc puffer.
But it makes sense, knowing which store it was in.

Speaking of dying, I've always wondered, I assume those dye jobs fade in time?

Orangish Porc Puffer

There's a porc puffer at one of the stores near me that is really orange compared to the usual ones I see.
Are there different sub-species/color phases or is this just a really cool lookin' one?

Definitely a Ceylon, but I'm not surprised you bought him as a Fig8. I don't know how many times I've tried to explain the difference to pets stores just to hear "He's got an 8 on his back; he's a figure 8 puffer" And in defense of the stores (very poor excuse) they probably ordered them a...

Yay! I"ve been searching for Irrubesco for a long time! I understand that the BBG are BW. I've had the gobies for a bit now. They were in with my Dwarf puffers (quite sucessfully btw) but I felt guilty about them being in FW, so I set up that 20g and was going to start moving them up to BW and ...

Irrubesco or Loreti? (ID please)

So, I started setting up a 20g tank that was to be a BW tank for future Fig8's, but then my LFs got in some "Bleeding Heart" puffers that look like they might be irrubesco, which I've been searching for for awhile. So, I got 2 females and a male. They're going to live in the 20g with a few...
