I've never heard that popcorn is bad. I've been a vet tech for 10 years, and I've never heard that one. Probably a choking hazard at the worst... I wouldn't have it loaded with salt and butter, but other than that, I don't see a reason that it's bad...?

The mechanism is unknown. Thanks J-P. He's a really good hawk. He was a late trap, so we didn't have a very long season together, but I'm keeping him through the moult and flying him at least one more season. I'm not entirely sure how falconry works in Canada, like requirements for licensing, etc. It's definitely not a hobby...
