power outage...
Not me, but several friends with the recent storms lost power, and in some cases, went days without power in 30˙F temperatures... does anyone have any recommendations for keeping their aquariums heated in the event of a power outage?

Re: A sick puffer. Can someone help?
I'm a novice myself, but your ammonia seems pretty high. I'd do a water change right away. How old is the tank?

Finally got my puffers...
Tank cycled, got 2 GSPs a few weeks ago, and they appear to be pretty happy. Thanks for all the help and advice!

Another cycling question...
Thanks for everyone's help so far and please bear with me... My new tank is going on two weeks, and the one remaining damsel seems to be healthy. Seeing lots of bristle worms in the live rock, and little shrimp-like critters in the sand. I added a few small hermit crabs to help with clean up, but so...

Re: What the heck?
Yikes, hope I never see anything like that millipede.
I think I also saw a tiny anemone, but it's so small, it could very well be a worm also... and a small shrimp that crawled out and into another hole so quickly, I barely saw it.
Hope this is a good sign that the tank is cycling normally.

What the heck?
Sorry for the newbie question... I'm cycling a new tank (no puffers yet, but soon...). When I purchased my live rock, I noticed a nice piece of dead coral and the guy at the pet shop let me have it without charging. A week later, I noticed these worrms growing out of the coral. Should I remove these...

Re: Off to a bad start...
Thanks for the responses. The bag of sand literally says it contains live bacteria, along with the claims 'no cycling needed' and 'add fish immediately:' http://www.livesand.com/ I added about 6-8 pounds of live rock. My plan was to start with two small green spotted puffers and eventually get a lar...

Re: Off to a bad start...
I just saw the big red warning requesting specifics. Here is what I recorded this morning:
ph 8.2
phosphate 0
nitrate < 10 (mg/L)
gravity is about 1.023, up from 1.022 when I started - I've been gradually adding distilled water over the course of the day.

Off to a bad start...
I'm new to marine aquariums, and specifically got one for a few green spotted puffers... I had one in a brackish tank in college many years ago and decided I wanted to get some more. So last weekend, I got a 40 gallon aquarium, set it up according to the pet shop's instructions regarding the salinit...
